We're all familiar with it - the band/artist who goes on making new albums of ever decreasing quality and digging a massive hole in their reputation and credibility. Admittedly, once you have a fan base who'll buy anything you put out it must be tempting to go on recording rubbish and putting it out there because it's a nice earner. However, for the fans who actually like decent music and not just recycled rubbish or music which attempts to latch on to a current trend, it's surely better to keep a musicians output sacrosanct rather than dilute it into oblivion...(cough, cough....Stones......)

And conversely which bands do you think should reform? Which bands/artists bowed out before their time at the peaks of their career?

I feel like i have loads but for starters -

Three who should split - Marilyn Manson, Weezer and Metallica.

Manson hasn't put out anything decent since Mechanical Animals. Every single album since has been declining in quality....i know people like Holywood but although it has a few ok tracks it's nothing compared to the albums it followed. Manson himself is an embarrassment and to think he'll ever recapture his former glory is beyond reality.

Weezer - i don't even really think this needs much explanation. If they'd have split after Green it'd have left a gaping hole in our hearts. Instead they plundered the awful song handbook for years to come....sad to see Rivers Cuomo lose his touch so much.

Metallica. Oohh controversy....Should have split after Black. I didn't like the Black album myself but can understand why people do...everything following that release has been pretty much dire, and an embarassment to their early releases. Whilst Death Magnetic was ok to iffy, i'd much rather have never ever have experienced Load, Reload and St. Anger than hear the middling good stuff on DM. Plus they're continually flogging a dead horse with live CD sales.

And one to reform - Nocte Obducta (seeing as apparently Refused are getting back together you get an obscure choice...). You won't have heard of them but they were great (if you like Metal that is...) For those mildly interested check out their two Nektar albums...and if you prefer proggy post-rock then Sequenzen Einer Wanderung may pique your interest.

(Edited because i realised my first choice for reformation was still active....)

I would like the Manics reform as four piece. By reform, I mean Richey comes out of hiding if he isn't dead. Though he probably is dead.

It's funny...the Manics would be a "why don't they split up" band for me. I found everything after The Holy Bible boring (which coincides with your point about Richey...although that image of him cutting 4Real into his arm with a razor blade is etched upon my memory).

Metallica? Seriously?

Lulu was shit but that wasn't really a true Metallica album. Death Magnetic was good and Beyond Magnetic was also good.

They also make great live CDs. S&M anyone? That was fantastic. I generally don't like live CDs though so I haven't listened to Live Shit, Binge and Purge or whatever it's called but that's apparently good too. S&M is an exception for me though and is just a great collaboration in general.

There was also nothing wrong with St. Anger. More people hate St. Anger because everyone else hates St. Anger. It's a bandwagon effect. And don't give me that "OH THE SNARE DRUM" excuse because it's completely dumb. It's noticeable at times but hardly ruins the album. It's not like Kirk Hammett just dropped his guitar and started rocking out on the keytar for an entire album while James Hetfield got high and played the citar. It's a drum. As for everything else about the album, it's a bit more emotional than the rest of their stuff which is completely fine. I watched the first half of Some Kind of Monster a while ago and its about the development of that entire album. I suggest you watch and see what went into it.

Most bands I really listen to though are either still together and still make great music or have disbanded. Only thing that comes to mind is Black Tide. Their first album was fantastic but they had a huge change in their second album. The first album was classic metal stuff, kinda a homage to older metal. The new album was basically emo screamo shit. Absolutely terrible. I hate to use the term "selling out" but they definitely did.

I also can't say I enjoyed Muse's The Resistance. I can pretty much listen to like every other album they made all the way through but The Resistance just sounds very... pretentious. In the end most of the songs sound like filler. There's like a few good hits off of it but most of it sounds like filler noise for "artistic effect". You're not Pink Floyd, calm yourselves.

Yes seriously, and not to cause controversy.

I've actually got the Some Kind of Monster DVD and i'm surprised you only watched half of it. It really illustrates how much they've lost what made them the band they were pre-Load era.

I wasn't actually counting Lulu...it was so bad i counted it as an experiment. As for Saint Anger....i agree it's not as bad as people say but it's also not very good as an album. Personally the only tracks that i find worth my time are St.Anger and The Unnamed Feeling. The rest of them are a mix of really iffy lyrics or just clunky ideas. All Within my hands is ok i suppose but given it's worse than some of the stuff from Load/Reload it's hardly a song of merit. Death Magnetic was indeed much better too, but again it doesn't hold up as an album in my opinion. It's telling that probably the best track was released as the first single (The Day that Never Comes). I enjoy one or two tracks but the album as a whole is below average for me. Go back and listen to Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets or ...And Justice and they're complete works with decent lyrics. More and more it seems Cliff's influence was as much brains as bass. Beyond Magnetic showed glimpses of Metallica being decent again but those tracks whilst ok in places weren't the defibrillation blast the band needed. They just don't seem to relevant any longer, nor know how to write decent material....those lyrics are seriously bad these days.

As for live CD's....i've got the DVD/CD box set of Binge and Purge and it's a great set...but tellingly they're shows from the Black era when the band were at their peak and so was their material. Today's Hetfield is a parody of the Hetfield of those days, and given that of late he's come to forget the lyrics of his own songs, it would seem he too has pretty much had enough, and seemingly lacks the enthusiasm he once had. S&M was ok, but again, that's mostly reliant on older songs. Plus you take virtually any band and stick them with a symphony orchestra and i defy them to sound bad. I can't stand System of a Down but i bet some of their songs would sound equally epic.

Link Park - Their songs were pretty awesome at first, but, they're no longer what they were, their songs just don't sound as good. =S
Slipknot - I listened to them pretty often back in the day, but then their songs lost originality and most of them sound the same. >.<
Limp Bizkit - I used to like them quite a lot, but then... They changed and their songs stopped being that good for me.
Green Day - They had it's time, they were friggin amazing for those years, the latest songs I heard from them couldnt even compare to their old ones.

I'm not a fan of Linkin Park, nor have i any real idea what they're doing these days, but the brief glimpses i've seen of them at least show they're trying to evolve their sound in a positive way. As for Slipknot, you really think that with the death of the founding Sid Wilson they'll ever make another album? I kind of doubt it, but agree they should probably quit.
Never listened to LB but i thought Gold Cobra was a return to form from the reviews i'd read? And as for Green Day. I'd let them play Stadium Tours because they look like good fun, but their new music seems awful and as if they've got carried away with their own virtuosity.

I would agree with Skelletonike regarding Linkin Park.
Since minutes to midnight, there has been only a few good songs by them.

Mike Shinoda and Chester Bennington should split their paths perhaps... Both are very talented and Mike Shinoda is a decent rapper on top.

Agreed.

How about Maroon 5?
Adam Lavine seems a lot popular by himself these days.
