Released today for the Nintendo 3DS eShop, the original Legend of Zelda is available for download in Japan. It was previously thought that this title would only be available for Ambassadors, but alas, today the first non-handheld Virtual Console title was released to the public, at least in Japan.

We’re yet to learn if this title will be coming to North America outside of the Ambassador program, but I’d bet that we’ll soon see that following a European release, the states will be getting a release for a similar price. In Japan the download is going for a mere 500 yen, about $7 US.

Are you excited for this news? Even if you can’t download it yet, it surely means that soon non-Ambassadors will be scrolling through the massive overworld of this classic game.

What's new in this VC? Apparently Ambassadors can update their copy for free, so I'm wondering how different this release is from the initial Ambassador batch.

Even though I'm an Ambassador, I will be very happy if it has save states :D

(The Ambassador version didn't have them).

Edit: well there is a certain dungeon that has an area with about 6 Darknuts in it and I died a few times. its just going to be a little better not having to go, find health and re-do the first bit of that dungeon over again.

Alright, math time.

Each game - 7 bucks

20 x 7 = 140

170 + 140 > 250 bucks (3DS original price)

The whole point of having the 10 NES and GBA games for ambassadors was to let them get the games earlier and for free.
As far as I know, regular customers (except the odd exception) were not able to get the Virtual Console titles for free and were not able to get them earlier.

Also, the whole "I could easily download a rom and play on nesDS" argument was already mentioned and destroyed in the original Ambassadors games announcement thread.
(Though I would also just download a rom and play it on nesDS.)

The ambassadors got them for free, mind you.
So? I could easily just go download the ROMs for free. The whole point was that the games were exclusive.

IRC, the GBA games were the exclusives and the NES games were not.
Nintendo indeed stated that "they have no plans on releasing the GBA games to the public."
But they never said they never will have plans for it.
It wouldn't make sense on a business point of view to directly say "We will let other non-ambassadors access the games later as well."
Besides, Nintendo would not miss an opportunity to make money.
Also, I just lost the game...

Yep. The NES games were said to have a future release date with more features such as save states and such which would be free for ambassador members. The GBA games are the ones that aren't planned on being released to the public. I'm sure eventually they will be, just not anytime soon.

Honestly.. Did someone think that especially the NES games were "exclusive"? No offense, but regardless of Nintendo's future plans, NES titles have been available for most customers for years.. Emulation is just too easy. I prefer to buy the few NES games available, but I have to admit that about 99.99 (add some 999's in there) have gone missing... I sincerely hope that these titles (inc. all ambassador titles) become available for everyone. You guys got quite a few games for free. I, for one, am willing to pay for certain games. Sure I can get the games by dumping the original carts with a DSL, but I'd prefer online with the 3DS s´VC version.. If a flashcart/PSP can do about the same as my 3ds VC, the chances of me paying for extra content goes down...

ps. Sorry for possible grammar mistakes. It's about 9 hours after the time I should be going to sleep (for real dudes.. It pays off)... Btw it's around 7 pm now.. Sleep...

So much for exclusive games. -_-

Last I checked, Nintendo said only the GBA games would be ambassador only. In other words, Ambassadors never had exclusivity on the NES ones.

Of course in the end, Nintendo will probably end up selling the GBA games anyway.

No. You can't count a sandwich that's been in the fridge for circa 25 years as delicious, fresh deli. I'd pay a buck each game at best, but unfortunatelly I own some of'em already so... I wouldn't even buy them in the first place.

Plus, your reasoning would make sense if you had a selection of, say, 100 games and chose 20. Otherwise it's Nintendo telling you what games you should play.

The Ambassadors games are like wine, you see?...

No, no they're not. Older wine is pricier because the process of its production takes longer. The "age" of wine is a marker of how long it was maturing, you can't open a wine, drink some, close the bottle and pretend it was never opened - it will go bad. Once opened, you have to finish it, be it young or old wine.

The idea behind buying things is having a larger choice and decide upon one product, and it's only fair to the customer that older, more obselete products are cheaper compared to newer, more refined ones.

By giving everyone 20 identical games that are old, Nintendo nullifies this choice - you play what you are given rather than what you actually want to play.

By pricing them at the level of 7 bucks, you lie to yourself. I can get them for 5 or under in a random game store.

EDIT: I realize that you're not completely serious. Don't get me wrong KingVamp - those are genuienly good games that are enjoyable to play, they just shouldn't be put on the same "shelf" as a contemporary game though. I suppose my approach comes from how I was brought up - where I come from, you can play any game you purchased on any medium you want, meaning, if you have a video game, you are entitled to dump it and play it on an emulator if you want. To put it in legal terms, "You are entitled to backup a medium given software was available on at the time of its release and alter the format by whatever means necessary to launch it on the hardware you are interested in using it on". That means that if I have Mario Kart GBA, I am entitled to have a ROM of Mario Kart and play it on a DS via an emulator. I am only restricted as to how many devices I use it on simultainously - this reffers to Operating Systems for example. If I have a license for 1 computer, I can only install the system on 1 device. The device itself however is not specified, thus I could create an OS image and use it on an Architecture emulator if I feel like it.

Good luck finding the exact ones you want. I know 99% of the time I have to go to a vintage gaming store downtown to get some games. Given, a large part of this is I feel an obligation to support non-chain stores in any way I can. But for someone like me who goes to get a game and wants the box, the inserts, etc. you end up spending far more than $7 to play a game.
Here's another thing: Don't fool yourself. So long as Nintendo keeps re-releasing these games, they will never fall into the realm of "abandon-ware", and thus they continue to be only distributable by Nintendo.
