EDIT:

Well hello there Scavenger, don't we look all sexy? Well I'd do you, unless you're a furry...you're not a furry now are you?

Anyway this is a red herring, this isn't the answer so look HARDER elsewhere, think long and hard at the clue.

With only two days on the Japanese market, PS Vita was unable to overcome the 3DS's full-week advantage, as the Nintendo portable's sales managed to overtake the new system's despite its launch buzz.

Many are watching PS Vita's overseas debut for signs of its future performance, and the health of dedicated handhelds in general, as smartphone gaming continues to pick up in popularity. A slow start could leave developers weary of providing software support for the unit.

PS Vita's initial 324,859 units sold last week is double that of the PSP's opening weekend sales of 166,074 consoles, but it's noticeably lower than the 3DS's weekend launch of 371,326 in Japan last February.

Local tracking firm Media Create, which provided these hardware figures, expressed some disappointment over the sales: "To be honest we would like to have seen it sell a bit more, but you can say that it reached a certain level of success."

Media Create CEO Atsushi Hosokawa blamed the lower than expected weekend sales for PS Vita -- 65 percent of its reported 500,000 shipment for the week -- on its high price and lack of strong launch titles, according to a report from Andriasang.

The 3DS, bolstered by a very strong holiday slate of software (e.g. Monster Hunter Tri-G, Mario Kart 7, and Super Mario 3D Land), actually saw its week-to-week sales increase: 367,691 units compared to 350,321 two weeks ago.

All other consoles saw a boost in sales in Japan, too: PlayStation 3's numbers grew from 44,661 to 65,119 sold. And while PSP dropped from the #2 to #4 to make way for its successor, it still enjoyed an increase from 51,191 to 64,468 sold.

Wii sales also jumped from 46,018 to 60,916 systems sold, and the Nintendo DS line climbed from 6,630 to 9,155 sold. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 sales saw modest gains, increasing to 3,584 and 1,400 consoles sold respectively.

Below are the full sales rankings from Media Create for the week ended December 18, 2011. (The second chart lumps together sales of all models in a given line of hardware.)

Well the Vita was only on sale for 2 days BUT it was also on pre-order for many months. Its still very impressive to see Nintendo sell so many units, obviously helped by a port of Monster hunter, Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.

I'd expected the Vita to do more than 3DS, even with its launch line up there being as "meh" as the 3DS line up was, its a new handheld and its a new PSP...Japan loves PSP!

And this means what exactly ?
Something that was been sold for 7 days outsold something that was been sold for 2 days ?

And I dunno which tit wrote that but 322k units compared to the previous PSP numbers of 116k is a massive increase and in no means a slow start.

Anyway, I'm not sure the source means that the Vita couldn't overtake a week of the 3DS, I think it's a typo and is supposed to say "Full weekend advantage"

The PS Vita is between 10000 and 15000 yen more expensive than the 3DS. Is it that surprising that people are wary of that difference? Wait until Sony drops the price desperately in panic before we condemn the sales figures.

It was inevitable, not even a non-Nintendo home console launch can beat Mario. That plumber is the reason Nintendo stands tall today and even to this day I love Mario games. The PS Vita is releasing overseas in February 2012 right?? Those are the months when Kid Icarus, Resident Evil Revelations and Kingdom Hearts will be in the ring (well KH & KI would be a month away but PS Vita is releasing end-Feb). However, it remains to be seen if Pitt and co. can repeat the Mario marathon which is impossible to be honest.

Except that there was no Mario or any of Nintendo's big franchises at the 3DS's launch.

When the 3DS was released it was around the same price, well, at least in Europe and in the USA it was 250€/250$ respectively, so the price range would be the main dif.

Memory cards were pretty much de-facto mandatory with the Vita as it had absolutely no internal storage.

1. 3DS was 25,000 yen over there at launch, Vita is less at 24,980 for the wi-fi model and not that much more 29,980 yen for the 3G model. Granted 3DS didn't have a new machine as competition back then.
2. Nintendo makes a loss on every 3DS sold. The Vita seems to be a lot more pricey piece of kit and they lose on each one sold so Sony will lose even more if they reduced it.
3. Its only week one, no need for Sony to panic at all.

Ehh, don't mean to offend anyone but I don't really care about Japan's sales. If anything I want the sales for the Vita and the 3DS to be THE EXACT SAME worldwide so then fanboys can't proclaim whichever is better because one sold more. Would be pretty damn funny. Then Sony and Nintendo would realize how stupid their decision to split up in the early N64 development days was and will join hand and hand, creating a massive console/handheld company that NOBODY CAN STOP! MWAHAHA!

the problem with us fans is tht we compare the two soo much. even more than xbox and ps3. for this reason, hate develops for the other console (be it little) and then they dont buy the opp system.
but is really nice to see the 3ds selling like pancakes after many months

I'm guessing Monster Hunter had the biggest impact on sales. I'm curious to see how the sales match up over the next few weeks.
