Andriasang, a Japanese YouTuber timed a freshly-charged PS Vita, a 3DS and a PSP 3000 from when they were booted up until they ran out of battery the reported results were as follows:

The 3DS ran out of battery at 2h 35m. running Monster Hunter Tri G
The PS Vita ran out of battery at 3h 47m. running Uncharted : Golden Abyss
The PSP 3000 ran out of battery at 9h. running Monster Hunter Portable 3rd

I've seen the 3DS so far for just about 5 minutes in a shop. Can't make out if the 3D effect is turned on or not. Now if it isn't that would be even more devastating.

Can anyone say whether or not this is:
All three systems on max/minimum brightness (for 3DS, full 3D slider?) (Sound fully off or fully loud) etc?

For creating a thread about statistics and providing only the results with no variables is really not helpful if someone wants to verify it

That's the source for this test (@OP make sure you include a source ;)). I'm not sure if the test was conducted by Andriasang or not, but oh well.

The brightness, sound and 3d (only on the 3ds) is maximized. Whether the wifi is on/off is unknown, but I think I can see the wifi on the 3ds (dunno about the other two systems).

Youtube comment:
"OK, there's many problems with this comparison:

1. Only the wifi on 3DS was on (3:25 wifi light flashing). Now, any fool would know by now that using wifi would suck the life out of those batteries
2. The 3DS brightness is set on setting 6, which you cannot normally do.
3. Volume max with earphones connected? What's the point on that.
4. PSP is euipped with large volume battery. Like you gonna get 9 hours on stock battery."

Along with what each device is set to (such as brightness, WiFi, 3D in the case of the 3DS, etc), you also have to take into account just how process-intensive each of those scenes are. Battery consumption is not constant throughout each part of the game. Consumption won't be as bad in a non-intensive scene vs a highly-intensive scene.

Now, not trying to give extra points to the 3DS (but I'll be called a fanboy no matter what for this), but given that it is using a 1300mAh vs the others using ~2200mAh, it's not really that bad. I use the PP+, so in such a case, I'd get more battery life (at the cost of not being able to use the attachment for MH if it comes state-side).

I can understand the "Volume max with earphones connected" done with all 3 systems, but due to other variables, that doesn't make the comparison any more fair game than leaving sound completely off with all 3.

The tester probably didnt wanna hear three simultaneous repeating audio tracks for 9+ hrs where he was holding the test, but wanted to include the usage of sound production/amplification as part of the battery draw. but using earphones (if they are all earbuds) would still draw less power at max volume than leaving them all playing loud.. not a good part of the test procedure in the end.

I agree on the WiFi thing killing the real world comparison value though

Yeah, my psp 3k with a 1200mAh battery and clocked at 333MHz (iirc, the 3ds is capable of going 400MHz) can go for 3~4hrs in intensive gameplay (like Kingdom Hearts BbS), although the brightness is at its lowest + I use earphones + no WiFi. With WiFi on, it'd probably be equal, so I can assure that 2 1/2hrs is decent for the given condition.

Also, I have a 2200mAh battery for my psp 1k (it's very bulky, so it doesn't fit inside the 3k's battery cover) and I can assure you that it is capable of going 9hrs. I believe the psp in the vid used a 2200mAh battery to compare to the Vita, not the 3ds; now we know that the Vita uses approximately 3 times more processing power than the psp, using batteries with the same capacity.

"The 3DS brightness is set on setting 6, which you cannot normally do."
I'm not very familiar with the 3ds, but how did this person find that out, and how did the tester set it to 6? :wtf:

This test is quite unfair IMO. The 3DS battery may be used while the Vita is considered pretty much new - this isn't stated.

Also, by setting the brightness to max, obviously the PSV will win out and have a clear advantage. It's like running a race; if two players run slow (one being ahead than the other) of course it'll keep it that way, but if there was a speed boost for both obviously the more 'powerful' person ahead will eventually run even further away.

even a new bought psp battery wont run 5 hours for me.
not saying that the 3ds battery isnt tiny, cause it obviously is, but yeah... not exactly a real test
