Lame. I'm not surprised though. Sony has deep enough pocketbooks to make any wrong doing of their own disappear it seems. It's unfortunate because this will only show them that they can walk all over their customers and get away with it. I only hope others don't follow their examples.
It disturbs me that they can get away completely free with removing advertised features from the systems (even if you decided not to update and keep the Linux functionality, you lose the ability to effectively use most other features, so you can't really use that as an argument). With PS2 compatibility it's different; the older models that were made with them didn't have that feature removed. But this is just plain ridiculous.
What is really screwing people like me is that since I won't update, I can no longer play new games that I buy, re-activate previously bought store items, or play online. Playing online is the least of my concerns because their online services blow ass anyway, but it would be nice to play with a couple of my friends again.
I'm running CFW but it's disgusting to see how dead and dying the scene is for the PS3. I've been dying to play a game I bought but since I won't update I have to choose over losing the freedom and control over my system as it is, or updating for new games. Its total BS.
I use to love Sony, prior to the one guy leaving/being fired from the company, they were a solid company who made good products and stood behind them. It sucks so hard that they've essentially turned their backs on those who support them but this is the "new" Sony so whatever. They are dead to me now. Ultimately, I don't blame my PS3. It's a good system I blame the jackasses who made it and ran it into the ground.

Sony's trying to protect their hardware, so people can't just run custom crap on it. Can't blame them for that.
Hell, I love my PS3 without any custom firmware. I use it to play games and have a good time. Do we need more?

Tons of people used the OtherOS, Linux features. Making it seem like no one used it just makes you look ignorant.
Oh I dunno, how about the freedom of owning the system you spent hard earning money on to buy? How about being able to backup and store any and every game save you made, regardless of copy protection BS. Or what about being able to prolong the life of your blu ray drive and saving your games from scratches by running your games off your internal hdd? Need I go on? Just saying.

No console allows you do to that, hating on Sony just cus you choose not to update because they aren't allowing you to backup games and potentially pirate games is stupid.
Anyway, you want Linux? Get a fucking PC.
You are clearly lacking in vocabulary and missing the point. I'm not "hating" on Sony because of that. I'm hating on them for making such stupid requirements to play new games. No one should HAVE to update their system to play the new games they bought. Screw the pirating shit, that has nothing to do with what I said. Backing up game saves was the important note you missed. However, being able to keep my game discs new is a nice bonus.
Lastly, Linux is awesome. No matter what it's on, anyone can get it on a PC but having it on a game console make it unique. Plus, it was excellent for a media server of sorts. I don't really care because I still have it, you guys are the ones with the real loss.
You need to be a tech geek to like/run Linux now? Damn people did get dumber then if that's how it's looked at. I've shown many friends the joys of the many Linux variations and now about 85% of them now use Linux exclusively for their computer needs. Most of them aren't computer literate people.

There's one reason I can think of that it has copy protection on saves is because of online games. It happens on the Wii and I'm not sure about 360. You can transfer saves if you get a new PS3 though.
This is why I can't stand Linux guys. Trying to act superior in every way.
I'm in Informatics at uni, and about 80% of my fellow students use Windows. Another 10% use OSX, and only 5% use a Linux distro. Kinda awkward when I boot Scientific Linux when everyone else is running Windows 7, but whatever. We've had many classes on *NIX systems and only a couple of people have started using a Linux distro part-time, mostly Ubuntu. People who willfully use Linux for their computer needs are nerds (though I suppose you could exclude Ubuntu users from this).
I take it you disagree then. that's a shame. Being forced to update for games will always be BS, no matter the system.
Not exactly true. Friend of mine who had his 60GB die on him had to restart all over for all of his games because his new PS3 wouldn't accept his old HDD due to the console locking I assume. In all fairness though it was his fault for not making backups of them. That what you were saying? Maybe I misinterpreted.

Sounds about right. To clarify, that's what I turned them all onto was Ubuntu. Figured anything else might be too much to handle. But the point is they all love it and use it exclusively. Not having to pay for a $200 product key was a big hit with them.
Incidentally, I happened to fall upon a Wikipedia page that has a list of known Linux distributions (I'm looking for another one to use that isn't Ubuntu). The sheer number of variants astonishes me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions

The coolest one I came across about a month ago is Commodore OS. Pure genius. Really, it can't possibly get any cooler than that (or Scientific Linux).
