It is not about what is at heart because anything can be put down for that.
It is about what they do with that heart.

I mean we pretty much go to any high profile game and go "it is the same thing at heart" then
give a bad review on that.

Which would just be annoying everything else about the game.

Some games at heart and content is still the same.

What adds/changes more,CoD or MK7? (Legit question)

Even then (special with all these other shooters) doesn't it tire out after releasing it every year?

Imagine if Mk was release every year...

Holy shit you could blow into the microphone to inflate balloons in Mario Kart DS?

This is literally the first time I ever heard about this.

"Unlike in Mario Kart DS, the rather neat ability to blow into the microphone to inflate balloons is no longer included."

Yes, and thank god it is. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about.

This is literally the first time I ever heard about this.

Then you're lucky. The idea was nice, but it was too gimmicky and too hard to actually do. Sometimes I had to blow practically an entire days worth of breath to get the balloon half-inflated and on other times if i blew very soft it would inflate immediately. Everyone hated it.

I too had no idea about this.

The main difference between MK and COD is that Kart only comes out on different consoles- a handheld online MK is a wonderful thing, and if they can stop the cheats and ragequitters that plagued MKDS then all the better.
To join in with earlier posts... Other M was a return to 3rd person Metroid, Wind Waker is much better than Twilight Princess and thanks to this thread I now have a much clearer idea of which 'tempers are fat!

Jim Sterling gives a popular, generally well reviewed game a bad write up? I am shocked!

Mr Sterling thrives off the attention these reviews give him. He's all like "Nom. This attention, while negative, is so delicious."

In all honesty Other M was a piece of crap and Super Mario Sunshine was probably the weakest 3D Mario platformer of them all. For the record I think Sunshine was absolute garbage, especially when Galaxy and Galaxy 2 completed blew it out of the water. Oh yeah, Galaxy 2 is also incredibly similar to the original Galaxy as well.

There was also three Metroid Prime games before Other M.

Oh, and Zelda games are still rather formulaic. It's basically the same general design with different inserts. The only departure from this is Skyward Sword but that still basically fits the formula, just with some new elements. I could still basically recite generally how every Zelda game will go by now.

I think your reasoning shows me that you completely failed to see my point..

The question is not if Nintendo succeeded with taking the risk of changing up their games, since all I wanted to point out is, that they took the risk, in contrary to other developers... If those changes were good and made sense is a matter of subjective opinion and I don`t think this thread is the right place to discuss that, since I for one complete disagree with you over-exaggerated opinion (garbage is a very strong word...).

Also I already said that Galaxy2 was "just" an encore to Galaxy and Nintendo always treated it like that. And I think it is quite legitimate as well, that if Nintendo actually takes the huge risk of changing a franchise like Metroid in a drastic way as they did with Prime I think no one should blame them if they ride the success a little. Oh, and on another note: the changes from MP1 to MP3 are still bigger then anything most of the other 1st-Partys ever did to their franchises and I don`t even want to mention the guts Nintendo had to incorporate motion controls into their most-beloved franchise in a time where everyone was bashing them...

Also how many long-running franchises are damn formulaic but that argument somehow only occurs when a new Zelda is coming out... I mean damn that`s what game-sequels are all about: Similarity with a little new. If it doesn`t play like Zelda (that means overworld->dungeon->overworld->...) than why not just do something different?! But then call it something different... I for one would be pissed if they would change the game up completely so I don`t even recognize it, since it`s not like a Zelda-game comes out every year. I think Nintendo went a good middle-way with SS, because it feels familiar in some instances and still very new and fresh in others ;)

Sorry guys for the off topic and the text-wall but I´m pissed over people completely ignoring anything that`s good about Nintendo and posting everything that`s bad about them. I swear most of the people here when I see their avatar I already know if their comment will be negative or positive, which shows their objectiveness.

Ok i'm 90% sure that he's trolling.
10% sure he's just stupid.
Anyway about this whole debate about Nintendo not doing new stuff...well honestly, who does much new stuff?
Games like Halo and COD are just like map packs and texture upgrades with new shiny weapons and campaign, so why does Nintendo get bashed for making a new Zelda or Mario game?
Mario Kart adds as much as them each game (maybe even more because of every game being on a different console) so why do they get bashed while COD and Halo get praised?
That's right, cause everyone LOVES to bash Nintendo to make their games seem better.
In other news, he gave Modern Warfare 3 a 9.5/10 for it's innovative and original gameplay.

Wait, you're saying that Call of Duty and Halo don't get bashed but everyone hates on Nintendo?

I give props to this guy, at least he's made some good points instead of blindly praising the game because it's got Mario stuck on there!

You know what, we aren`t talking about MK7 in general. It`s about this or similar guys who bash MK or Zelda for not doing something new and give games like CoD:MW scores 8 and up, which is unfair...

Would you mind to elaborate on those good points... Seems like that is blind to me, if you cannot even give an example!

I gave it at least a 9, it is a great game. The difference between this one and others that this one is the best portable we ever had before. Only one thing they removed Vs. mode for single player -.-;; And we have more restrictions in Vs mode.

I love this guy
Even series like Dynasty Warriors and Madden boast fresher features with each iteration than those found in Mario Kart 7
I lol'd.

Read the review guys instead of just the score. He explains it quite well.

And yet a guy who gives another COD game 9.5 calls Mario Kart unoriginal, that's delicious irony.

CoD = Same as the last one in the series. Similar guns, similar gameplay, similar EVERYTHING. Apparently this is worth 9.5.
Mario Kart 7 = Different approach, new concepts, a bit of nostalgia, new ideas. According to his logic, NEW IDEAS ARE BAD.

A quick welcome to the real world:

Game reviewers make money based on how many people read, favor, and return to their reviews. No one wants to be told their favorite game sucks, so game reviewers know to rate games ensured to sell well HIGH. The people who fall into this way of thinking are generally going to be the first ones on the "Mario is for kids and doesn't do anything new ever" bandwagon while playing CoD 52.

Just because they say it, and submit it, and people read it, doesn't make it true. Game reviewers are fucking smart like that.

You've all been trolled. Congrats.

Outside of the 'Temp, I haven't heard much that bashes CoD OR HALO (except after Battlefield 3 was released, then everyone puppy-dogged over to it and started hating those two) and I live in an area that is DOMINATED by gamers, and go to school that is DOMINATED by gamers and sk8ers (which I hate because they're all drug addicts).

In all honesty no.

Your opinion.
For the record I think Sunshine was absolute garbage
For the record it wasn't. Wow...
especially when Galaxy and Galaxy 2 completed blew it out of the water.
Yes, so what? One game is better than another. That happens with games you know...
Oh yeah, Galaxy 2 is also incredibly similar to the original Galaxy as well.
Eh, yes, you know, it's Super Mario Galaxy 2, how can it be not similar? Also it was fun and well received anyway :P

There was also three Metroid Prime games before Other M.
Yes, that's why they are called the Prime trilogy. And all had new mechanics, new weapons, powerups, new controls and structure. And don't forget the risk Nintendo took when the first Prime was first person.

Oh, and Zelda games are still rather formulaic. It's basically the same general design with different inserts. The only departure from this is Skyward Sword but that still basically fits the formula, just with some new elements. I could still basically recite generally how every Zelda game will go by now.
Now this is funny. Of course Zelda games stick to the "Zelda formula". If they would't do that they wouldn't be Zelda games :P What are people expecting?
It's the same with Mario Kart. How should Nintendo make Mario Kart so that it would be "different"? Make it a kart simulator?

Guild, Guild, you are just awesome!

5 is a bit harsh. A 5 game should be mostly unplayable. A lot of other reviews make his same general points but give it a 7.5 - 8. I like how wired put it "sure it may be just Mario DS with a fresh coat of paint, but its still really hard to put down". Isn't that what you want in a game?

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.

I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
