Sorry, previous questions seems a bit stupid now. One more question (sorry for being a pain) do I have to delete all the other files of my SD card before I put the Modmii files on?

Forget my last instructions. If you don't know a clue what you do you may brick that Wii, so stick with a guide for now

This is what is says when I try to install bootmii as boot2 -
Mounting SD card....
Creating Directory'/bootmii'...
Writing '/bootmii/armboot.bin'...
Writing '/Bootmii/ppcboot.elf'....
Failed (-1)

Then for some reason I thought it would help to try to install it as an ios again at it came up that it had failed, then tried it again and it was successful. Someone please help. There is no button on the HBC for bootmii, even though it 'appears' to have installed as IOS

Right sorted that problem with the bootmii configuration file, so far there have been 5 bad blocks, which the guide says is okay. At the end when it was verifying the bad blocks vanished.Fingers crossed I get this done tonight, mum's coming to visit tomorrow and I can get this burden away from me!!!

Update - I wasn't paying attention and deleted IOS52v15661(IOS52v5661[FS-ES-NP-VP]) how can I get it back?!?!

Right, recified everything and did what the guide told me to do, although I did install the USBLoader(s)-ahbprot58-SD-USB-v11b-IDCL (although I dont think my mum would need it) and it still won't play anything from disc channel. What now??

open it up and see if the disc is spinning. sometimes it gets stuck. when stuck disk is hard to move. look at the metal things that move up when the disc is put in. sometimes they get bent and touch the disc causing it to stop turning which creates your churning noise. do not touch the laser until after you verify that the disk can spin freely.

Fingers+optical drives=scary combination ;)

Had this exact same issue on the PS2s when they were popular. The laser eye (or lens) is most likely borked... Does the disc spin up then seek-seek-seek-seek over and over again then give bad disc message? If it does, then it's almost certainly the laser. Last ditch cheapo solution is to try cleaning the lens but usually useless. Replacing lasers and replacing lubricant on mechanism (slider/worm gear/...) made the systems like new! I bet the Wii is exactly the same since it's essentially the same drive technology.

Does anyone have a link to the troubleshooting guide for Wii optical drives?

Sorry, just a few questions to clear things up:

1. When you hit home on the homebrew channel, it says that it is using 1.0.8 with ios58, correct?
2. When you hit home on the homebrew channel, bootmii is one of the options?
3. Were you able to install bootmii as boot2?
4. What alphamule said, does the disc spin up and then seek-seek-seek-seek over and over again then give bad disc message?

Did you already install the wad, and deleted the file off your SD card, or did you go in to the wad manager and delete the wad from there? If it is the first one, the WAD is still installed on your Wii so you are fine. If it was the second one, it should still be on your SD card, so just reinstall it with the WAD manager.

Nah, if youre careful theres nothing scary about it. Although I dont recommend to actually touch the lens with your bare hands :)

Sledgehammer :P

Anywayz, the mechanic in the Wii DVD is very simple. If you have a little experience with electronics its pisseasy to fix. That is, if the laser isnt busted.
Replacing the laser isnt very hard, but its very sensitive and breaks easily.

Have you tried multiple legit game discs on the Wii?

If the lense is just dirty you might be able to clean it. If the lense is weak or still dirty you might have to adjust its strength by spinning a "POT"

If the whole drive is busted then you might have to replace the drive. New ones can be bought online. Alternatively as others have suggested in this thread you could buy a big SD card or USB storage device and run your games from that.

Bootmii is also one of the options when you press the 'home' button while on homebrew
I wasn't able to install bootmii as boot2....should I try again?
