Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has confirmed that the 3DS' next firmware update will introduce a framework that will allow developers to sell extra downloadable content for their games. He also confirmed that Nintendo themselves will offer DLC for its games as well. However the introduction of DLC for Nintendo games will not dilute the content of a players initial purchase, and that they will still enjoy a complete gaming experience even if they do not purchase any DLC.

In an interview he stated:

"In terms of what the next system update will allow, it will allow developers to sell add-on content, and whether that's for a physical game or a digitally released game," he said. "In terms of how it will work, it's up to the developer whether they want to make it to buy new levels, new items--all of that is up to their imagination. Essentially, what we're doing is creating the framework for those transactions to happen."

Super neat, I guess. It'll be even cooler if a some of the developers decide to give their DLC rather than sell it.
I, however, really like what some have done in the interim - like Enjoy Gaming Ltd. did with their QR code levels for Pyramids

Cool. But when are we gonna get it? I've been waiting for the "next big update" for this unfinished piece of hardware since the web browser was released. Come on, we don't even have any 3DS ware yet. They're selling us old rehashes of shit DSi ware.
They wont be referring to it as 3DS ware, and there is - the 3D Classics are not VC, and there's Let's Golf 3D, Pyramids, and Freakyforms.
oh, and they aren't rehashes of DSi ware, they're the same downloads they always were.

I hope nintendo will make real DLC, not like capcom or others, announcing already developed DLC before the game is released.
Only time will tell, I would love extra world for mario/extra cup DLC for mario kart.

Nintendo, welcome to the world of dlc spamming.
:tpi:

Extra Mario Kart 7 tracks sometime in the future? ^_^

I doubt it, tbh.
I can see some dlc for Cave Story 3D and Mario Kart 7.
I think that could happen.

At least with spotpass we get free content for sure. With dlc, you have to be lucky to get free content.

Awesome, Nintendo gets to enter the, "with a few exceptions, mainly rip the consumer off with crap DLC, and intentionally leaving shit out of games so you have to pay extra for it!", market. Here's hoping that they won't be like Microsoft and to a slightly lesser extent, Sony.

Those aren't DLCs. The costumes are already in the game cartridge, they're just unlocked when certain conditions are met (including spotpass/streetpass).
