Hacking Worth getting a black new Wii or is the hardware inferior for HB?

So 'cos I'm going to keep my Wii indefinitely, being the perfectionist that I am, I've been thinking how bits of it are going to go all yellow over time; to this end I've thought about getting a black Wii. However, IIRC there are problems with newer Wiis and the disc drive/Homebrew channel but I don't really know the specifics - even though a black Wii will look far nicer still in 10 years time, is the functionality going to be crapper compared to my 1st generation Wii?

No chips or anything.

If your wii is old enough to have bootmii as boot2, than it is far superior to the black wii. If you have a wii that is compatible with bootmii as boot2, and want it to be black, I would suggest just replacing the case with an aftermarket black one. They can be found cheap online.

Either you're a real heavy smoker, or you're terribly misinformed. A normal "white" wii isn't going yellow over time at all.

Other than that...there are two...sorry: three differences in wiis, when it comes to hardware.
-the real old wiis (before mid 2008, IIRC) can have bootmii installed as boot2. The others can only install it as IOS, which is...not terrible, but the former is preferred.
-somewhat around the same time, nintendo started using different optical drives. Better for them, in the meaning that it cannot read/play backup DVD's at all.
-the very latest wiis (less than a month old) no longer have gamecube ports

That's it. Further hardware is pretty much identical. All wiis are hackable, and the HBC works with all of them.

Those colored wii's came out after nintendo had their updated boot2 and optical drives, so a black wii will, by default, never be able to play backup disks (no big deal...USB loaders are superior).

As impizkit says: just replace the case if you want the thing to look black. It's not that there are problems with the new wii, but why bother buying a new one if it's just the color you don't like?

Cheers, yeah it has the BootMii as boot2. Am I right in saying that the aftermarket cases won't be official though?

EDIT: Wever, the bits on the underside that have rubber grips can go a bit yellow. I know it's a bit lame but I'm a real perfectionist - plus the sticks on the nunchucks go yellow so I could plump for black... but I'd want a matching console. I plan to keep this stuff forever.

The new black wii is perfectly hackable, I know because i've got one. The only difference is you can't install bootmii as boot2. The rest is the same.

I use priiloader instead of bootmii for some kind of protection.

That'll be the exact same as buying a black wii case, except that it's more expensive. I'm not sure what you mean with "it won't be official". It'll be third party (at least: afaik, nintendo doesn't sell casemods), but so what? If you softmod your wii, the software isn't "official" either.

If you absolutely HAVE to have an "official" black case, try asking some stores that work with exchanging cases on Wii's.
They tend do have a stockpile of original cases.

Not exactly then same thing though is it? Plus, there is no official HB channel, whereas there are official cases. I'd have no idea where to find one of these shops with spare official cases.

Anyway, if you have to have an official case, then maybe you could look for a broken black Wii. All you want is the case, so it doesn't matter if the Wii itself doesn't work. But why does the case have to be official anyways? What makes the official one better than one from a different company?

If you have to ask I think you just don't get it - some people just want things 'proper'; I'd also want it in perfect nick which is unlikely with a used/broken one.

I would actually probably be the same way if I wanted a case, now that I think about it. At least I would about getting a used case. If I was buying a case, though, I would only be getting one to make my Wii stand out, so for that I guess I would have to get one from another company.

Or paint it yourself with some nice motive

I would go for a 3rd party NEW case though. I dont want a used one thats full of fingerprints and potential scratches.

I would never trust myself enough to paint it. I would be way too scared I would screw something up. I did have a painted PS1 though, gold and black, it looked awesome, it also had a modchip, but all that was done by someone else. I stupidly sold it, and now I wish I hadn't, but not much I can do about that now.

And yeah, that is what I was trying to say with the cases, I wouldn't really ever want a used case either.

ok i forgot to mention about BootMii. BootMii fully operates using GC controller only. And this is problematic on newer wii's as any other recovery tools for semi-brick wii's requires a GC controller.

I can say tat it's not totally safe to mod the newer wii's today as you cant go turn back.

I have a very old Gamecube Memory Card and yeah I've noticed it's turning a little yellowish in the part that is exposed to enviorement, the side that is inserted to the slot is just fine, I think it's inevitable that things turns yellow, the only way to avoid that is keeping the unit stored in a dark place and not exposing to extreme temperatures. Those yellow marks appear only after like 10 years (at least you live in a place with extreme high temperatures, dusty and very polluted) =P.

But for that time you will playing your Wii games on WiiU, and keep your Wii stored for GCN games, don't worry =D
