For those who are unaware of it, the formerly pay to play MMO DC Universe Online went free to play this week on both the PC and PS3. And as a result John Smedley, SOE’s President, announced via twitter that it has gained a staggering 120,000 new players on the PC version alone within the first 48 hours of it becoming free. It also saw a 300% increase in the number of concurrent users logged into the game during that time period.

If you want to join in the fun you can sign up to the PC version via Steam, or alternatively through the official DC Universe Online website, you can also download the client on PSN.

Having tried it out myself on PSN I can say its well worth looking into, however be aware that the PS3 download clocked up to a meaty 14.5GB. Which even on my very speedy connection took over six hours to complete.

Next news header: DC Universe Online loses 119.9k players this week, when the players all realized the game is terrible.
Maybe not. But the MMO is pretty bad.

It isn't too surprising since it's on Steam. Free game on Steam? Yeah, people are all over that.

PS3 also isn't too surprising since it's one of very few MMOs on it, and now the only free to play one.

Any old player of the game recommends it since it went Free to play?
I'm not very comfortable playing MMOs that use this kind of model since in most of them the free accounts get the lowest tier of items (I hate when you need to "rent" items just to keep a little competitive when playing against users with powerful items).
Is this the same case with DC Universe or does the fact that this game was a subscription based one balances these kind of issues?

It's about 100MB but once you accept the T&C, you'll be downloading 13GB. Took two hours for me, no idea if it maxed out my connection since it didn't show (I get 1MB/s from downloads and in most cases 8MB/s from torrents and such).

Anyway, tried out the game today! I spent most of my time customizing my character, aha.
The learning curve is low, which is great since most MMOs I try to play drops you off in some town letting you find out what to do.
The combat is like hack n slash? I dunno but I love me some button mashing (Warriors fan here).

Pretty decent for F2P! If anyone playing on PS3 wants to play sometime, add my PSN: Prowler485

Well, curiosity got the best of me so I'll give it a try. Hope I can really make my superhero and can enjoy using it since I wasn't satisfied with the gameplay in City of Heroes (and the fact I loathed having to reload every time I entered a building almost as long as I waited for traveling between continents in WoW).
Seeing as how my WoW folder has reached the 32 Gb mark after the last couple of patches and the fact that you are downloading all the content in one shot instead of regular updates as a previous user, I think 13 Gb is not too big considering that it isn't a recent release (I think it had a couple of "expansions" in the recent months).

i played this game since beta and enjoyed it very much, for people who like wow they wont like this game it seems. I personaly get extremely bored in wow but in DC its not the case it has the kind of mmo combat I like just wish you could use more skills at once.

i remember looking at the steam acc and it was mentioning 30GB which for me, is a tad too huge so i just gonna forget it for now... At least until i buy a new harddrive..

Still to those who play, is the actual gameplay decent? Or just regular mmo with dc characters in it's place...?

The gameplay isn't bad, its more like a third person scrolling beat em up as opposed to a point and click mmo, well that is the case on the PS3 anyway. Also you don't actually play as a DC character, but as a unique character you create. I think that is a wise move, because if that wasn't the case you would see a hundred Batmans/Supermans running around at every turn.
