Nintendo DS and Wii were hugely lucrative for many reasons, but part of their success is down to the innovative new games only possible on Nintendo's hardware: fromNintendogs and Brain Training to Wii Fit, these new genres really made the hardware into global phenomena. Of course, other hardware manufacturers and publishers soon caught up and Nintendo's advantage diminished, so what is Nintendo to do next? Think of the next big thing, of course.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata spoke to investors about the company's plans to continue expanding its gaming audience, and a big part of that is new genres to entice them in:

Aiming for the next fiscal year, we are also working on new genres of software that may attract people who are not particularly interested in video games. In order to further expand the definition of video games and to create new software fields under our gaming population expansion strategy, we are planning to launch several new software titles in the next fiscal year.
Iwata states that Nintendo's unique position of producing hardware and software will help it to provide "meaningful surprises" to attract a wide variety of consumers, as it did with Wii and DS.

Needs more genres similar to the one in Senran Kagura

Since we had a Hyper Tits battle genre maybe Japan can do a revitalized loli RPG or action genre. Oh and Kagura did well in Japan btw.

look at that thread, see all the hate.

sometimes, I don't get people.
I agree with you. I don't see anything wrong with Nintendo developing "new types of casual games". Contrary to what most people think, Nintendo does make games for both core and casual gamers. Just looking at the 3DS, Nintendo is releasing tons of core games,
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D
  • Mario Kart 7
  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • Star Fox 64 3D
  • Kid Icarus: Uprising
  • Paper Mario
  • Animal Crossing
  • Luigi's Mansion 2
  • Super Smash Bros. 4
  • Mario Tennis
  • Fire Emblem
A couple of so-called casual games won't do anyone harm. It's what helped the Wii and the DS succeed and those systems had an abundance of good first-party games. I don't see why it affects anyone at all.

first person platformer
Tbh, that actually makes sense. :P

Rpg platformer?

As much as I want the 3DS to be varied in games, I didn't want people to classify it as a casual portable.
They need to find the right balance to make it just a gamer portable.
For devs to continue taking the 3ds serious.

What other new genres could there be? It's probably just a mix and mash up of one or two like most modern games are doing anyways.

Were any of those games really new genres, or just new takes on existing ones?

As for Nintendo's attempts, I think they're doomed to fail. They really caught lightning in a bottle with the DS and the Wii getting a casual audience; it really won't happen again. The people interested in those sorts of games are already content with them. I really doubt that they would be interested in paying hundreds of dollars on a new system + games for the same thing.

Doomed to fail? How many times have countless people said that with the DS and Wii?

I'm telling you, the 3DS is a dynamite waiting to explode. I can't believe Nintendo isn't pushing 3D movie deals hard enough. Optimally, come holiday season there should already be tons of retail 3D movies available already. That will make the 3DS the ONLY portable 3D player in the world. People wanna try home 3D entertainment, but the hardware needed is extremely pricey. Enter the 3DS, and you'll see 3D entertainment boom.

It's all in the 3D movies, Nintendo. That's all you gotta do. Companies will be scrounging like crazy trying to come up with their own portable 3D players if that happens.
