The #acekard channel topic on irc.gbatemp.net:5190 has been updated to show the build of beta 1.8.9. I have no idea what the changes are and I'm sure they would be mostly private anyway. I'm posting this as a status update to help show that development is still active since the release cycle can be quite long.

Help make future versions even better, if you notice a bug in the current version test it out according to this procedure and post a report.

On a side note if your unable/unwilling to use wifi update you can get a later version of the CMP_USRcheat cheat database it was last updated in that forum on 10/17 at the time of this post.

Lastly some loader updates have been released since 1.8.8 @ http://akaio.net/loaders/ , for those who missed normatt's post on the fix, or didn't know he released a refix.

Dated 09/29/11 Notes: "Refixed Kirby Mass Attack (#5833)
Dated 09/27/11 Notes: "Fixed Kirby Mass Attack (#5833)

Update:

According to smiths in a post right below the 1.8.9 beta implemented the following:
Right now besides loader fixes and alterations and the Arm7 cheat window speed fix, the only thing that made me change the version was... well.... I drank.
I got tired of internal names for DS Homebrew that doesn't have a good header just saying "DS Program File"... so it will say the file name now.
HELL YEAH IT'S AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Smiths said:
besides game fixes there's not a whole lot new inside AKAIO. little cleanups for better memory usages and whatnot.
another commit just happened... we're at 30 games fixed yay.
we want this weekend, but it depends on Norm and I coordinating... it's holiday time so Turkey/Ham Dinner > AKAIO

If I see anything else posted I'll add it, though I'm out of town so I won't be updating for next couple weeks.

Good to see that they're still developing, I'm still on version 1.8.7 because of the slow scrolling ...

Keep us updated when > 1.8.8 is available!

Your "drunkeness" seems to be the most consistant indicator if there is progress.

I got tired of internal names for DS Homebrew that doesn't have a good header just saying "DS Program File"... so it will say the file name now.

That is a bit handy for us who use a lot of homebrew and have to switch to filename mode to distinguish some of the them.

One thing I wonder about is the future of Akaio as the Nintendo DS line winds down, I would suppose DS support will be frozen soon after the last few games come out and then its either retirement or off to Akaio3DS.

Actually that is a nice feature.

Isn't all Homebrew/card software actually a beta?
Program completion status isn't linked to retail status. Minecraft was sold in Alpha and Beta for a long time, as an example.

I'd really like to see support for storing some 'proper' names for GBA roms, matched based on the gba headers internal ID

We'd need a database on the cartridge (containing every GBA ROM/CRC/Title) that would need to be scanned every time a directory was entered. That don't really seem so feasible.

Man. I don't know about ya'll but kinetic scrolling on Wood 1.40 would be a great addition to AKAIO. Could we please have this new feature Smiths? Normatt?? Oh and the ability to use custom icons again too, please.

Do you think it's worth it coolness? I asked for a start up sounds (like an .mp3 clip) on akaio.net and no one from the AKAIO team ever answered.
