I have had my Wii since launch and it has never failed on me until now. I bought Kirby's Return to Dreamland and when I put the disk into the Wii I would hear 3 small clicks but no motor is running and also the fanblade isnt running either. Whats going on?

Did you try another Wii game in the wii? It seems like your wii doesn't like the game at all or your wii disk drive failed.

My disk drive definitely failed. I really don't want to have to take this to Nintendo because I've heard they are removing drives that can read backups and I do use neogamma for my GC games I made backups of. What can I do to fix this myself?

Where can I buy a new drive? I've fixed Wii's before so I'm comfortable doing it myself. With a new drive will I still be able to play backups?

Buy an old cheap Wii and swap the drives. Or consider using USB loaders. Not sure if there are lens cleaners available. Google is your friend :)
I dont want to have to buy a whole wii just for its drive. Is there some online store that would sell Wii DVD drives I can buy?

Use USB loaders. Screw the DVD drive. Just buy a Gamecube if you want to play its games so badly. Or use dolphin. Try ebay for Wii drive though. Seems like the most likely place to sell them.

What exactly am I looking for when searching for a DVD drive on eBay. I want to make sure it works just as well as my original drive to be able to read my backup disks.

Uhm mine were dead too, then I decided to replace the lens (**not the whole drive**), and yeah, that's possible. If you get a cheap drive on internet you may buy a D3-2 drive... which unfortunately doesn't let you read any backups at all (at a hardware level, doesn't matter which loader, disc you use, except for original GC or Wii media..)

You can use a d3's lens on older drives though. Its just the daughterboard that differs.

But if you feel comfortable with ripping the wii apart, do so and check if the lens has got stuck or something.

Anyway, as already stated. You need an old dvd drive in order to play backups from it. Anything but D3 works.

I am sorta of a perfectionist but what ID was the Wii's Drive? I like to try to have it as original as possible. Thanks again for helping me.

It's D3-2 and D4 .drive chips that prevent backups, not the lens.

Before spending money on a new lens, try a cleaning kit. The cheapest place to get them is from Nintendo.

Aww dammit I just checked the Nintendo Online store and they are on backorder till January. I'm gonna have to stick with Wiiflow till this gets resolved. Thank you guys for your support. So what is the name of the DVD drive the Wii uses to read backups I want to make sure.
