Hacking Xbox 360 Glitch Hack chip

Deal Extreme just started carrying these. This looks to be a fair price on them, considering the hack is relatively new. If I were to pick one of these up, I have a few questions.

1, What does it do; what does it allow you to accomplish (only homebrew? Does it let you boot games from an external drive?)
2, This does say FAT-JASPER on it, but says it works with all Xbox 360's (except Xenon) and Slims. Why wouldn't it work with Xenon's? Furthermore, mine is a Xenon... but I think that my brother's is either a Zephyr or a Falcon... it should work with those then, right?
3, if it does, chances of being console banned?
4, Says it works with all X360 NAND programmers. Do I need one of those?


What are the chances of finding something that DOES work with a Xenon?

Edit - For the record, I have zero knowledge of how to mod a 360. However, I am skilled with a soldering iron (which I know I would need to use), so no worries there.

1) At the moment all you can do is boot xell. Which lets you play some hombrew and you can also use it to retrieve your cpu key. No retail games using the hack yet, need a hacked kernel to be released for that.

2) Seems dealextreme are selling pre-programmed chips, but just using the same description for them all. The glitch chips have different programming for each console revision. Xenons don't work because the glitch needs the HANA chip. Xenons have no hdmi out, so don't have it.

3) Xell doesn't even give the option for live (no retail stuff), if a hacked kernel comes out, then it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll get banned if you go online.

4) Yes. You have to write a hacked image to the nand after installing the chip for the glitch to work. So you need a programmer to read your original nand, then write the hacked one back. You can buy one (lots of companies make them), make one http://dev360.wikia....and_SPI_Flasher or you can do it through the lpt port which just requires some resistors and a diode. Dumping it over lpt takes a long time though compared to usb. People seem to be requesting them, some hopefully dealextreme might get some cheap ones in at some point.


Something that does work on the Xenon, well you didn't say what version you're on. If you haven't updated to 8XXX or above, then the jtag hack will work on it (games from usb/hdd, dlc, xbla, region free and homebrew), if you're past that, then you only have a drive flash (games from burnt discs) or one of the drive emulators that are coming out (games from usb).

Sadly, I am on the most recent dashboard, so I can't JTAG it (really wish I could though, lol). Just checked my little brother's 360, and his doesn't have HDMI either, so I couldn't glitch hack that then. So a few weeks ago I did look up stuff about drive flashing, but I couldn't find a conclusive answer to the pros or cons of that.

Call me greedy, but yes, I would like to have my cake and eat it, too; does drive flashing carry any or a high risk of being console banned from live as well?
-Would installing the game to the 360 hard drive or removable storage (flash drive) and launching the backup that way reduce the chance of getting banned?
-Would there be less of a chance of getting banned if I a) don't play multiplayer while playing a backup or b) don't connect to live at all while playing the backup?
-Does running a 360 with a flashed drive make me susceptible to being banned if I am playing a legit retail disk on it?

Somewhat related, do you need a certain kind of drive in your computer in order to back up your own disks?

Flashed drives carry a risk of being banned, following the newest iXtreme firmware and guidelines of keeping your game updated to all the security checks and reburn disc when necessary. I believe installing games to hard drive does not reduce your chances of being banned as checks are done during booting. Not connecting to live when playing backups may not help as the Xbox logs all failed checks and is sent to MS when online. A flashed drive, even if you never played a backed up copy has a chance of being banned. (Take iXtreme 1.6, safe at that time, for example.) You need a Lite-on iHAS124B drive or similiar to burn backup of future and most recent Xbox games with XDG3 format. They are available for around $20 Yes this drive is rebranded and compatible.

Backup/piracy on the Xbox has gotten harder recently, and may not be worth it if you want live. Safe firmwares are only safe until MS finds a way to detect them, if they do detect them you can be flagged for a ban even if you have not played a backup game. If game checks are changed, you have to reburn, if you failed to do so or if new checks are added without our knowledge we could also be flagged. Xbox are usually banned in a wave which is hard to tell others to stay offline, since they're all flagged already and to tell what caused the ban. Last major ban wave was in Nov of 2009 (I believe), which seems like its been long overdue.

Point is MS made the Xbox, they have control over it, we don't know much about how things operate on their end.

If I'm wrong and I can use a more updated Jasper with this chip, then please clue me in. I own one brand new jasper and my other ones don't have HDMI. I have one that I can jtag that is HDMI but it looks like a long drawn out process to achieve and I'm just not that into gaming any more to spend the time on that.

All any enlightened hobbyist does is keeps one modded system online and then one system that isn't modded online for purchased games.

This stuff above has been discussed over and over and it always comes down to that.

Imho after they banned my console, they lost a customer (not to be ah I can't think of the word right now, but realistically spending money on online gaming isn't a priority in my life so I rather do without and it really doesn't matter and yes that means I never got into WoW either).

To rip your own originals you need either a benq or lite-on (not slim one) xbox 360 drive flashed with the 0800 ripping firmware, dilav covered everything else .

Jaspers came out end of 08, update to block came out summer 09.

Glitch hack can be used on all current consoles except Xenon, no matter what software version they are on. Although if you have one that can be jtag'd, then I'm not sure why you would bother with the glitch hack. Jtag is much more mature, has a hacked kernel and is a more reliable method. Both of them take about the same amount of effort. Jtag you have to read and write nand and install a few components , glitch hack, you have to read and write nand and install chip

Alright thank you all very much for the answers, guys. Looks like I'll be keeping my 360 unmodded then, I do value the prospect of online play. Maybe some day I can pick up either a new Slim or find another old 360 at a flea market.
