As cranesbill pointed out , it blocks the light, particularly the green light which is the color of light that chlorophyll absorbs for photosynthesis (dont anyone try and say it doesnt block light because the fact we can see it means its blocking the light). Explain how that could be eco-friendly.. the thing is, these activists are covid vaxx pushing, who supporting retards without the ability to think critically.

You... do know that chlorophyll is green because of the whole light spectrum, green is what it absorbs the least, right? It reflects it while absorbing the rest. What a weird way of calling yourself out while mentioning folks not having the ability to think critically....

It makes me sad because I love science and this is one of the basic concepts.

They were so close, but so far away and then they jumped off a 20 story building.

But hey, you IGNORED what a fake doctor in microbiology pointed out (falsely) - because I highly doubt that Greta would deliberately release a toxic dye. Incoherence is a quality of MAGATs, not others.

I've not done anything specifically in science for a LONG time, yet this is of such basics that it almost seems impossible for anyone to get wrong or forget.

I'm just pointing out all the dumb sciency shit that I can see whilst trying to be chaotic neutral.

I did some Googling for curiosity on this one. The image came from a BBC article, who themselves got it from Getty Images. There are a looooooot of stock photos from that day on Getty, but I did find a few that appear to show other angles of the same thing, so I would lean towards it being a genuine photo:

www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/young-man-is-seen-standing-with-a-sign-that-reads-ice-out-news-photo/2218842465
www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/cars-burn-in-front-of-protesters-in-los-angeles-california-news-photo/2218800360

It's quite clearly the same person with the same sign in those images.

Anyway actually on the topic of the thread, protest is annoying. For it to have any real impact it has to piss people off. If anything I'm shocked some bio-degradable colouring in a polluted river has pissed off this many people, it seems relatively low stakes given current events around the world.
Alright. Thanks for the clarity on that.
I wouldn't be so judgemental on it if the person who posted it had an initial source on it.

But the initial photo (especially at that angle) made it really sketchy feeling to me.

what? chlorophyll reflects green light '-'
I was literally thinking about this during my shift, and was going to double check it when I got home.

Because usually what is reflected at us, is the light that isn't absorbed. Which for chlorophyll it was already blocking/reflecting green light, so for the water to be the correct green, shouldn't really damper it's ability to absorb the other wavelengths.
(If I am recalling this information right.)
So, in theory, yeah, it should have very minimal impacts on the eco system if any.

That's because it's neither forgotten nor "gotten wrong". It's a lie.

Why do all "climate activists" turn so extreme eventually..
Echo chamber much ?
What exactly is so extreme about this?

ooh ooh yeah you're so right because you said so

You can make a protest work and not look like an annoying prick towards people minding their own business

Why are you so concerned with what she looks like? She signed up to do the protest, she is well aware how it'll be perceived. Whether or not she looks like a prick is her problem, not yours. She's a big girl and I'm sure she has the emotional fortitude to handle it.

What do you think should be done? because in the early 2000s Al Gore had the level headed scientific approach and nobody cared. Granted, because people are idiots, but even so.

or everywhere really

At this point i have no idea 😥😓. But stunts like that are making no progress imo.

We've already passed several critical thresholds for global warming, with seemingly no progress on avoiding the rest. But no. The problem is how people try and draw attention to this.

If dying some water with a non-toxic dye is too far, what isn't? The dye has probably already dispersed. The mass migration that comes when the warming really gets going won't be so temporary, but it's in the future so who cares.

I'm sorry, remind me again what happened back in June?
Getty Images A protester holds a sign reading: ICE: Out Of Our Communities as burning Waymo cars line the street on 8 June 2025 in Los Angeles, California.

I find it very funny y'all are immediately escalating this by blaming to the right-wing when it wasn't mentioned at all here

The goal of this post is to show what not to do when doing an environmental protest

You proved his point 👇

Which is why they still continue doing this if everyone has given up giving a shit

48 hours and 130 euros. That's not a punishment, it's just a price tag. (or whatever the quote was)

You think they be more effective to target sites of mass industrialization or political decision making, but instead would rather target cultural/ historical sites. They could choose to target more appropriate places yet continue to choose not to.

Let me ask you this, what correlation does throwing soup at the Mona Lisa have to the air pollution?

Is this going to be the stock response to undesirable photo evidence on the Internet from now on? Looks like it. It's going to be damned near impossible to discern truth from fiction anymore. FWIW what is depicted in the background in the photo above did happen. Whether some dumbass in black pajamas, a mask, and his arm in a sling posed in front of it, I don't know.

Here are some stock photos including a woman in a red fishnet suit (nsfw) who did pose in front of it.

ok you are all very right to correct me, i made a mistake and said absorb when i should have said reflect. But my point stands, i think at least, that the light penetration must be reduced by the murky/dyed water.. and reduce photosynthesis.. am i wrong there?

The way light and colour works is unintuitive, so I don't blame anyone for getting it mixed up. But yeah, dyeing water green or any colour is going to affect light absorbtion in one way or another.

... how much it affects the ecosystem is probably the more important point. Forests don't disintegrate because a cloudy day drops light levels by 5%. Boats also block light.

The dye has probably long since dispersed, and some places routinely dye their waterways green for St Patricks Day with no problems. Chicago has been doing it for the last few decades. So a brief tint in Venice is probably fine.

Venice's waters are actually quite polluted anyway, so if anyone is suddenly concerned with water quality there are much bigger issues at hand. Hmm. I wonder if that was the point...
