Was in my first car accident.

So as the title says, yeah. I was heading down to a friend's house with some heavy retro-gaming in mind, and I decided to take my dinner with me. This was the first time I was going to his place (met him in college this semester) and I was looking for the right street. I slowed down to get a better view and ended up spilling my food all over the inside of its bag. So I took a turn and parked near a restaurant to clean it.

When I started pulling out though, I accidentally put my car in NEUTRAL instead of REVERSE, and hit a little street bumper. I kinda panicked, and tried to hit the breaks, but my dumbass hit the gas harder. And an unfortunate driver was in my path.

Thankfully nobody was hurt, but I can't stop feeling so bad about it. Like, if I had only eaten at the house, or checked my gear, or some stupid shit. I broke down earlier because of how horrible I felt, and the other driver wasn't angry with me (at least he didn't seem to be) even though I felt like he should've been. But my dad reassured me that it was fine, and told me not to beat myself up over it and that it happens to everyone. I dunno, I just have a killer headache over the whole thing....

I thought that if I talked about it and discussed, it would help me feel a little better.

That sucks, man.

I've had my license since July of last year, and haven't gotten into an accident or gotten any tickets (Knock on wood).

Out of all my friends, I think I'm the only one who hasn't.

You hit his car? How hard and bad? If you just bumped the bumper, than there's no worries as, well, that's what they're meant for.

Though the steel bumpers are better.

The police decided not to give me a ticket, so at least I don't have THAT to worry about.......

And I hit him from the side; it's dented in. The front of my car is in worse condition.

That actually made me a little better. lol

The goal is not to try and make any mistakes, but instead learn from them to move towards perfection. Many people try so hard to prevent mistakes when they are missing out on life lessons. If you haven't learned from your mistake, I suggest you repeat it until the probability of not making it again is near 1.

As for me, I'm a little unfortunate. I have been driving for nearly 7 years (a total of about 70,000 miles) and haven't managed to accumulate one accident or ticket. I bumped into my own trashcans once because I was too lazy to move them. Don't get me wrong, I break laws all the time mainly including running red lights/stop signs when no one is there (why waste break, thus wasting gas for a light or sign when it is perfectly safe to go. Even when people are around, if it is totally safe to proceed through the intersection I will take it).

My theory is that, if you didn't hurt anyone in the incident, you shouldn't feel bad enough to beat yourself up for it. Cars, although they may be crazy expensive, are still inanimate objects; people are more important.

A dent may cost you a big fine, but death can cost you your sanity.

I hope you feel better. :)

I had my first accident when I was still in high school. I was working two jobs (one during the school week after school, the other on weekends), and borrowing my sister's car to get to the weekend job. It rained pretty hard one day, flooding the highway I usually take to get home. Unfortunately I was so tired from working so much and school, I wasn't paying adequate enough attention and missed the flares around one turn. They'd closed off the highway and were turning people around. I was smart enough not to slam the brakes, but still ended up hydroplaning right into the back of a state trooper's vehicle. She wasn't in it, and her car suffered a slight dent to her rear bumper. My sister's Dodge Shadow however crumpled like a tin can on the passenger side (leaving me miraculously uninjured). I felt so bad cause she loved that car, it was her first... From that day forward I don't drive other people's car unless absolutely necessary.

It doesn't sound that bad man, cheer up. Bumper to bumper is nothing once no one is hurt, btw when you said you hit and then mashed gas again wasn't the car still in nuetral meaning it would just rev up?

good to see you're safe but think about a checkup since you never know.

ALso on my first accident i totaled a barely a year old car...

Yeah, I realize I left it in Drive and through it on Neutral after the collision to quickly get out of the car and see if the other guy was okay.
