Today has been a great day so far...This bargain/thrift store whose owner I know personally is becoming really popular. So I asked if I could help out, and the owner said I could work the register from 4 to 8 PM on Thursdays and Saturdays (It's not a lot of hours in, but it's still some side money for games and stuff)...I'm getting paid about $7.50 an hour, so that's about $60 for those 2 days, and since it's all under-the-table, I don't get a tax deduction. Anyways, on to the other good part.
While I was there today, taking an inventory of toys, appliances, and furniture, I stumbled upon a case that said Game Gear. I was thinking, "Hmm, what's Game Gear?" and then I realized, "OHH!! That's a case for the old handheld thing by Sega that no one liked..." I picked up the case, opened it, and saw that a fully in-tact Game Gear was in there, along with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Home Alone. I then proceeded to ask my boss how much she wanted for it, and she said $3.50, but all I had was a five, and she didn't want to go through the process of cashing my five and giving change, so she just said take it.
When I got home, I replaced the batteries, put in Sonic 2, and turned it on. It was just a black screen, but then I realized that I had the brightness turned all the way down, so I turned the dial, and it works perfectly...No control problems, no audio/video problems, etc. I guess I got kind of lucky today. Also, I know it's not the best thing I could have gotten, but they also had an SNES with all cords, Super Mario World, and one controller for $33 (I'm going to save up and buy it), and an original Gameboy (It's $11, so I'll probably pick that up eventually, too).
tl;dr version: I got a free Sega Game Gear, it works perfectly, and I also found an SNES ($33) and Gameboy (Original, $11) that I'm going to buy soon.
