Just two semesters worth of packed lunches and random stuff. I will also be bentoing - creating artsy fartsy lunches with cookie cutters and molds - just for fun!
My eating style:
- I was a binge eater. I still can be triggered by pizza and crunchy carbs, but I am hoping that packing a bento style lunch will help with portion control.
- I'm not into sweets, except for gummy candies with weird textures.
- I don't like chocolate too much (yeah, weird!)
- At uni, I tend to graze a lot - this probably means that I will pack a lot of cut veggies and fruit to snack on.
- I love vegetables of all kinds, but I do not like much fruit
- also, am mildly lactose intolerant (yes, I fart up a storm after ingesting milk), so I will be cutting down on dairy (maybe a few slices of real cheese)
- I love Taco Bell's "fire" sauce
My bentoing supplies:
- cookie cutters
- egg molds
- silicone cups
- baking cups
Bento Questionnaire:
•How is “Back to School” going for your family?
I'm the only kid in my family who goes back to school. It's crazy, and I'm packing my stuff for school. Stupid out of town university!
•Is school lunch important part of your day?
Yeah. I tend to get Rita Replusa levels of cranky without food, and I like having a lot of food on hand. It is also important to have a balanced meal and a cheap one. Also, it has to be convenient to eat (boo to eating at tiny uni desks) and easy to store away in my knapsack.
•What is school lunch like at your school or your child’s school?
Expensive and pretty heavy on the carbs without much regard for the green veggies. (A slice of veggy pizza costs about $5 here, and it's not filling enough.) There is a localvore styled cafeteria and a fast food one, but I usually end up dropping by the convenience store style ones for a sandwich. I'm a big fan of their eggplant sandwiches (breaded, seasoned eggplant on foccoccia bread)....mmmmm...
Also, the localvore styled cafeteria is pretty annoying to visit - it takes forever to get something freshly made - they do stirfried noodles, but I would prefer not to take the time to visit.
•Do you pack lunch for yourself and what do you pack?
I try to pack lunch for myself, but it gets boring to do so. I'm hoping that putting a creative side to it with bento supplies would help. I can see rice and other dishes (I have two microwave safe bento boxes), and a lot of dressed up sandwiches.
•What are some of your favorite lunch recipes (kid-friendly or adult-friendly)?
I have vegan friendly bean dip (homemade from dried beans), beef burgers and eggy messes. (Eggy messes = eggs and some meat product in a muffin cup.) I will probably try some sesame salt (very Japanese) on rice, and a couple of other products.
•What are some products that you use when you pack lunch?
Toothpicks, silicone cups, lids, cling film, cookie cutters (I just bought some Star Wars ones - yoda/darth vader/stormtrooper/c-3p0 heads!), egg molds.
I tend to use the single-tier bento boxes - less of a problem to pick up and less stuff to wash.
I'd be blogging and taking photos of my lunches for two semesters. Let's hope for not too much pizza!
