The hell of mention one place, on another place

So I'm here, at GBAtemp.net, nice place I conclude, how do I tell anyone else about it?

Most places carefully guard their membership. The last thing they want to do (normally), is give "the other guy" any assistance in stealing their members.

Members = posting activity = attention = advertising bucks (in some cases).

I have a modest personal forum. The trick is how do I let everyone know?

I belong to more than one forum community on the internet. I like them all for their individual unique qualities. And they are not always gaming forums, or private forums or even forums. Some are blog locations, some are just company web sites (that don't do the forum thing), some are popular locations like ****book and **space :)

And they all basically have more or less the same rules (even if written out differently).

Currently it seems the old saying "if you want something done, you gotta do it yourself" applies here. Or in other words, I guess I could just post all the links here in my blog, and just explain what they are for and let others just go or not based on their own level of interest. Or I could post a link to my forum and then spill the beans there (it being MY forum there I can essentially do what I want there).

I'll probably begin with a blog posting here, listing all my fav destinations first. I can take it for granted GBAtemp gets more visitors than my forum does :)

Well I became an "unmember" at yet another location. Not sure if I got banned by some snitty little twit moderator though, I'd have to actually try and return in order to find out.

The location was a modest little forum of gamers. Predominantly the quasi military themed gamer. Quasi military, because that's what I call you if all you play are consoles where you run around shooting up the place.

They specifically ASKED for assistance in attracting attention to the site. Now I don't know about you, but when someone asks me for assistance in gaining visibility for a forum, I don't mind helping if I can.
I have NO idea what they were looking for, but going ELSEWHERE and saying "hey you gotta check out this forum" is not the only option.
I posted a couple of links in a post, to locations that anyone in the military gaming world SHOULD know about. I inquired in the body of the post, if they had gone there yet and made any sort of attempt at drawing attention to their forum there. Logical idea I figured.

I got shit on for my effort, my links were deleted, and the "ban" word was thrown in my face as a possible response if I did it again.

Jeebus W Christos. Are they totally stupid?
I made it clear I was massively underwhelmed, and my membership was unlikely to obtain a second month.

I can relate to places not desiring competition advertising. I can understand a need to prohibit links to places that are essentially supportive of illegal actions. But to ban a link to a VERY well know leader in the hobby, a legit commercial site. And after they had specifically requested aid in getting more exposure.

I kind of hope they actually stay unknown, and fizzle away like they should.

well now you need to tell us what this site is so we can go on it and act like we just logged out of 4chan and into them. Come on!! I'm sure it will be fun!

:)

No I'm not interested in making net enemies (like I need more :)).

But to be honest, I see 4chan mentioned nearly everywhere, and to be honest I don't really know what or where 4 chan is.

This pretty much explains it.

I actually deleted all my popular guides on the Qj Forums and replaced them with links to GBAtemp a couple months ago.

This was after I made a thread on their help board to have my usertitle changed back to "GBAtemp.net", as it reset itself when my premium membership finally expired. Instead of replying, my thread was "moved to trash" and I received a PM stating as such. The message is a parody of that PM.

It will corrupt you. Just don't search google for 4chan, and don't click on /b/ when you don't get there.

I must admit. I know nothing about 4chan either...I shouldn't even mention it. I've never been and never will.
Its just too easy on this forum to get most people to agree with you if you say ________ and 4chan sucks! But I shouldn't buy in to either going to 4chan or posting anything about 4chan being bad. Its kinda foolish of me to mention them either way.

Basically.

Ok I'm daring and stupid, likely more the latter :)

Googled 4chan, got the page, got this explanation.

4chan is a simple image-based bulletin board where anyone can post comments and share images. 4chan's collaborative-community format is copied from one of the most popular forums in Japan, Futaba Channel. Different boards are dedicated to different topics, from Japanese anime, manga, and culture to videogames, music, and photography. Users do not need to register a username before participating in the community. Feel free to click on a board that interests you, and jump right in—anyone can contribute!

Ok now I know. It's imageshack with a forum. Not needing to register, that just HAS to be a mistake.
