Solus, Distro Hopping, and Me

Holy fuck I hate my life. Let's start from the beginning.

So, I haven't been in the right state of mind I feel since my last blog. I'm getting better you could say, but not where i'm comfortable. I've just kinda been riding life I guess. Nothing real exciting, but nothing real bad. I guess you can say right now is bad. I'll get to that in a bit. I have been trying to improve myself for the better. I've been taking walks around the neighborhood and cleaning up (excessively) and doing some other good things. I have taken a complete interest in the Bible and the word of Christ. I just wish I owned one. Having physical books always beat reading it on a screen. I want to buy one soon.

So, about that ol' thing called Linux. I was doing good with Souls, and maybe it's because i'm not in the greatest mental state I decided to wipe it. I wiped it all. I made backups and then I switched to something called Ubuntu Budgie.

Let's get this straight. I loved Solus. Solus was awesome. It just didn't have what I needed from an OS. It didn't have some key components I needed and most things you had to compile from source or even make a whole VM for. But It worked so fucking well, and I am now realizing my mistake. Let me rant for a bit

Ubuntu Budgie is the worst thing I have ever installed on my computer, and this is including GTAV malware and "Ultra Xvid pack.exe". This distro is so fucking slow and buggy it hurts turning on my PC, and i'm sure it is physically hurting the HDD being installed. I can't EVEN FUCKING REMOVE LIBREOFFICE FROM THE GOD DAMN THING. I WOULD DO A SCREENFETCH BUT THE SHIT IS LOCKED UP. Let me put this in perspective for you.

I could set up Solus with all what I needed in 15 minutes. Updates and all.

This thing wouldn't even install updates in the software store, or anything for that matter. It didn't come with libtorrent and fuck you if you try to remove something, because you would have to guess when it was done. You don't get a nice loading bar to know when it's done. It's a fucking guessing game because that shit is going to say "Remove" until you reboot your fucking machine. I am downloading Zorrin right now. I just need something, and I might come home to Solus if this gets too rough.

Oh yeah, and Plank doesn't even work half of the time. Never trust a distro coded from Indians

That is what keeps me with Solus. I don't feel like the community is ignored, they clearly take every suggestion to heart and work with the community. It feels like a real community effort compared to most distros.
It's not like Ubuntu or Linux Mint, where you just feel like you are tossing your suggestions into a hole.

I would definitely try Debian or Lubuntu (I absolutely hate the Ubuntu's Unity Desktop, so glad they're switching to GNOME). Debian does have a slight learning curve (such as su v.s. sudo commands), but it's probably the most stable distro out there... Not to mention, all of it's builds are named after characters from Toy Story :)

It's weird (to me) how you have issues with the Budgie DM. I have it running for over a couple months now. It's just as lightweight as Gnome-Flashback was, except it doesn't look like it was designed in 2006.

Same goes for Ubuntu updates. They never broke my system. Even when I haven't upgraded in a couple months, it never broke my system.

@DeoNaught Arch? Nah, I wouldn't touch that distro if it was the last one on earth.

@BARNWEY I've already tried Debian, it just wasn't for me. I looked into Lubuntu and i'm not a fan of the looks.

Anybody here tried Kubuntu? Looks okay. I have nothing to lose.

Kubuntu includes KDE interface afaik

I've had Kernel updates break my system when they took out legacy drivers for my chipset, the Nforce 430 chipset. From then on, I either had to use an old kernel, or stick with Windows. I could boot and use LiveCDs with newer kernels, but installing them left me with a system that was unbootable.

My LORD Maui looks nice. I'm going to try Ku and then Maui.

@BARNWEY Eh, those are typically server distros right? They don't offer anything different from what i'm trying?

I haven't used a KDE distro since KDE 2.x, so I bet it's much different now. I didn't like it back then, but I'll give it another go. Maybe with Mint KDE.

Have you tried looking at different distros on distrowatch.com? It's a great place to look if you're wanting to distro hop. They have screenshots, and a brief description of what each distro is tailored for, and a few mentions of the software it has.

Install antergos, it's pretty much just vanilla arch with a nice installer. and yeah, never trust tutorials or anything from indians. They are always wrong. I had to fuck around this old server running solaris since some hacker tried to send out 15000 spam emails from there. The only tut covering this smtp software was this fucking indian who mistranslated purge to send.

@Vinlark Actually, they are very different. For example: Fedora puts a lot of emphasis on free & open-source programs, which is what makes it really popular with some people. While some don't like it because they need to use some official software (such as Nvidia's proprietary drivers), it depends mainly on the person though. While Redhat is the base for Fedora, and I think it does have a server variant if I'm not mistaken...

P.S. Fedora uses the GNOME desktop by default, and I'm not sure what Redhat uses...
