Shin Megami Tensei vs. Final Fantasy

So, I was having "Awesome music sharing time" with a friend and I linked a Shin Megami Tensei song. I'm a pretty new SMT fan; my first was Persona 3 about two years ago. Before that, I was involved with the Final Fantasy community, a bit of Kingdom Hearts too. From the moment I picked up Persona 3, I was hooked. Persona 3 was an amazing game, and from the beginning it was obviously different from Final Fantasy. When I link songs, I look at the comments to see what kind comments they're leaving, viewing their opinions and stuff. "SMT > FF" wasn't new to me. I've seen it many times. But it's always bugged me. But when I read a comment saying something along the lines of "SMT is the new FF, the only good FF's were VII, VIII, and X. SMT is better." I snapped. I've had it with these FF and SMT fanboys.

Final Fantasy and Shin Megami Tensei are incomparable. Just because they're both popular RPG series, does not mean they're comparable. Final Fantasy and Shin Megami Tensei are both great series. Both have their fair share of good and bad games. The SMT community generally has immense hatred for the FF community. I can't choose peoples opinions for them; they'll have whatever opinion they want, but when they try to shove their opinions onto other people without even giving many, if any, valid points.

I'll start with the stories in SMT and FF's. Of course, if you've played a SMT and an FF, you'll know they have a different story each time. Shin Megami Tensei generally revolves around a person or a group of people with the ability to recruit or summon demons and use these demons to aid them in saving the world or something. Not always, some SMT are different. Final Fantasy is completely a different story each time, though it almost always involves saving the world. This is simply an RPG-cliche. Many RPG's have the "Save the world" theme. If you're going to compare SMT to FF on that base, then you might as well compare it to almost every RPG in the world other than Pokemon.

Next is gameplay. Every RPG is different gameplay-wise. FF and SMT are completely different gameplay wise. Each SMT and FF is different in each of their releases gameplay-wise but like the stories, they almost always follow the same basic idea, albeit subtle changes made. Final Fantasy generally had the "Fight, get experience points, level up, get new skills" setup, though that's been changing lately. As shown with FFVII's Materia system, X's Sphere Grid, and XII's License Board, and XIII's Crystarium (There are more, but those are just a few to make my point). SMT generally follows a "Talk to demon, ask him to join you" setup, similar to Pokemon (Though, even then there are many differences). This formula has been changed from time to time as well. In the Persona series after battle you may of been asked to choose a card with the, in this case, Persona. In Digital Devil Saga it was completely non-existent.

The final point I'll make is what made me make this rant in the first place: the music. Oh God, how Final Fantasy and Shin Megami Tensei music is different. So many SMT fanboys on the videos saying how "MEGURO PWNZ NOBUO!!" Shin Megami Tensei and Final Fantasy almost always have awesome OSTs. Meguro, Nobuo, and Masashi (Though Masashi has recently left Square-Enix, he composed many of Square's game OST's and I'll consider him major in the SMT vs. FF music debate) all made great music. I often find myself listening to their musical pieces. They're all completely different composers with their own original styles. They're nothing alike and also should not be compared. There's nothing wrong with saying "I like this song more than this one" but when you're completely saying one composer is better than another, isn't it unfair? They're completely different musical styles.

Final Fantasy and Shin Megami Tensei are both great series, but they're completely different. This rant was pretty lengthy so I'm gonna wrap this up. Before you comment saying "Wow, you made no valid points what-so-ever" I ask you, what DO Shin Megami Tensei and Final Fantasy have in common besides both being long-lasting RPG series?

Comments

They both are top quality game series. Other than that, they dont have much in common.

Yes, I have beaten Persona 4. Yeah, it was pretty difficult. SMT can be pretty unforgiving at times. xD

SMT is a very good series and i know a ton of people who enjoy them but for me I've only ever really enjoyed Devil Survivor on DS but its not that i didn't enjoy the rest of the series and as for the FF portion i go way back with FF at least 20 years and as a FF fan i really hate when so called FF fans claim that FFVII is the best in the series especially since a vast majority of them who claim that had never played FFVII(or other Final Fantasy) until Advent Children came out I've always preferred FFIX,FFVI and FFIV in that order as being the top in the series but that's just my opinion and obviously isn't fact but as to what you're stating yes the 2 series are both good/bad in their own ways and should never be compared.

Yes, I agree with you completely on the FFVII point. FFVII is an alright game, not the worst in the series but definitely not the best either. My favorite FF's are X, IV, VI, and IX.

yes FFVII is by no means a bad game its one of the top 5 FF games but i would put it in the number 5 spot behind FFX. I'm also one of the few people that enjoyed FFXII the battle system wasn't the greatest but it was still fun.The one thing i dislike about the series at this point is the lack of being able to go where you want its all a linear path that you follow.

XII is my least favorite in the series. But yes, the linear-ness is getting on my nerves as well.

Yeah, it's basically that.

Seriously? Some people ACTUALLY said this?
:wtf:

More like, FF = SMT on easy mode.

i never could get the whole FF VII is the best idea, sure at that time, FF7 was awesome, it was one of the first few 3D rpgs, we get it, but now, it's been that long since FF7, it cant be that it is still that awesome. Another thing that bugs me is that why the heck is one wing angel/arieth theme so damn popular? I know arieth theme is sad, so ? Let it go...

Anyway, what beatrice said is true, to me, SMT is like the hard version of RPG, fk up once and well, you sir are seriously boned. But still, so far i am enjoying strange journey, thanks to codes, i dont have to pray to any god to get new allies, so it speeds up the game, but i still enjoy mixing devils to get new hot and sexy devils :)

FF and SMT cant be compare in the first place, they are 2 pretty different game, with not a lot in common, i guess the common thing would be that after battle, u gain exp, and money and in SMT case(special money) and that they are rpg, i guess.

Can I be a fan of both series? Can I please? :)

Persona 4 is one of the best games ever. FF7 is one of the best games ever. Do I get lynched by both fanboy clans now or what?

I will say one thing on the music point, though. I personally think it is a mistake to use music with vocals, especially rap, as background music for a game. They may be fun and catchy the first few times, but after you've heard the same song a few hundred times with the same lyrics it's enough to make you scream. I still can't listen to Your Affection without cringing. It's not that there's anything wrong with the song, it's just that I've heard it more times than I can count.

May the person who said this burn in hell.

For once I agree with Beatrice. I like FF more than SMT but SMT is as hard as hell. I like FF's music more though

Can't we just enjoy both of them and ignore the trivialities such as one is better than the other? They are games for your entertainment FFS.

Final Fantasy is for wussies and SMT is for the more hardcore folk.

Personally I like Persona :)
