RSFFYTM #3 - Social anxiety, or just my stupidity...? Probably both.

So it all started with this tweet:

I wrote this after making up my mind to make friends with said girl, then standing up, and standing still, unable to move for 5 minutes. It felt really awkward.
Later today, I thought "Maybe I should just talk with her using Facebook Messenger. Yeah, that could work... but what do I say?" I thought I should bring up an interest of mine, and see if she catches on.
And what did I think of? Anime. Yeah, I know it was a stupid idea, but I thought, whatever she says, I can say something either way. If she likes anime, good. If she doesn't, I can try getting her into it.
Here comes my cringy chatlog. Prepare yourselves (oh my, I can't believe I'm making myself read it all again so I can translate)...
Note: I've talked with her before, hence the weird start.
Me: By the way
Me: Do you watch anime?
Her: Not really
Me: Are you interested? I know a really good beginner's anime that is my favourite to this day.
Her: I have other interests in movies and series
Me: Like?
Her: Series: Teen Wolf :D Originally The Walking Dead, but that's become boring, Pretty Little Liars, that's one with killing people. My favourite movies: In Time, all the Caribbean's films, The Great Gatsby, Red Riding Hood, and comedies, like Mamma Mia :D The Hangover.
Her: And of course, Dunkirk, but only because Harry Styles is in it
Her: And of course, One Direction: This is Us
Her: I mainly like films that make you think, and fantasy a bit sick (smiley's note: no, this is not my English being broken, her message made no sense originally either)
Her: And Johnny Depp films
Her: And a bunch of other series, there are a lot of those I like  (smiley's note: interpret this as the Tears of Joy emoji)
Me: Truth is, "anime" only means Japanese cartoon. It has a thousand genres just like other films and series (there's just a different word for it for some reason).
Her: I see
Me: Well, are you interested?
Seen: 18:44

I usually check my stuff for typos and bad grammatical choices before posting, but I'm not reading that shit again.
Kill me.

You are talking to someone seeing notifications in a split second with a lot of reading experience in 2 languages.

Welp, good luck trying to talk to her in person after that again:rofl2:

Am I the only one who couldn't see anything wrong?
Unless the "seen" and no further reply was the "awkward" moment?

Honestly you should just pretend nothing happened and talk about something else. Even ask about her own interests. That would develop the conversation and eventually get more natural.

But that's only my point of view.

To be honest Anime as subject is not the best way to start a convo... If it's a no it becomes kinda akward. I dunno how well you know the girl..?

Me: "Hey, do you like Anime?"
Her: "No..."
Me: "Yeah, me neither, fuck Anime amirite?!?!?"

B
Don't feel bad. Judging from the chat logs, she has trash taste tbh.

This life is far too short for the "social anxiety" nonsense, go with your gut.

Maybe the only awkward part was you asking if she was interested on anime for the second time, but apart from that, i see nothing wrong on the chatlog. I think a more unspecific question like "Do you like TV shows" or etc would be better in these kind of stuff, mainly when you are trying to talk with new people. Speaking by pretty much own experience, i just avoid trying talking about what i like until i know what the other person likes because i don't want to mess things up and i'm always overthinking what should i say, so i just try to discover what the other person likes first

I can't even imagine having to date ("hook up", "score", whatever the kids are calling it these days) as a younger person in these modern times.
Hell, it was strange/awkward (at times) ENOUGH in the 80s! :P
