Ok so this isn't a post about some personal issues or whatnot. (RAGE is the name of iD software's latest title, rather than hmm well ragequit or such
) Let's keep it about gaming guys! ![big grin :D :D](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
Anyways I installed and played Rage for PC and man, am I impressed. Lately I have been getting really bored with the typical fps I play on steam and this one is great.
So what's so good about it? The first thing I saw when I entered the game was FMV that was about average and although it was probably high res, it had typical blockiness of compressed video. So then when I was dropped in the first room, it seemed sort of ordinary but wait a minute, it was running really well. Ok so I figured that since there wasn't a whole lot of details in the first room that was probably why.
I ventured outside and after the brightness of the sun faded and my character's pupils dialated, the game still was running great! I was like wow now I guess I don't need to buy an upgrade for this massive game (said to be 26 gigs installed which I haven't checked yet but it was two dual layer DVDs and one single layer)
The graphics are pretty impressive for the current generation computer hardware we have. I'm running dual SLI 260 core 216s and 60hz lcd. The graphics from the very beginning were tearing all the way across the screen on a few different levels so I ended up having to exit the game and turn on the vsync forced on in nvidia display properites. When I went back in the game, everything was smooth. I could tell it was running at 60fps (as respect to 60hz screen refresh rate). This is great.
Fun factor? yes. Definitely try this game out. I had a blast with everything I started out doing from entering the compound to driving the quad and talking to people within the compound. It is somewhat like an RPG with respect to talking to people, getting different items, and buying/selling ammo and supplies with a guy. It is mission based which I like and you can also venture off to other parts of the map and explore a little.
The voice acting, imho, is crucial to this genre of story line fps game. iD software did an absolutely fantastic job. I previously played Bullet Storm and that game was just a mess of constant cussing and cursing. Although I'm not a kid, I found it VERY unnecessary and quite annoying. There is some in RAGE, but it is not over done and it is carefully orchestrated into the game much like the graphics, frame rate, weapons, and missions.
There are areas where the game engine will not allow you to drive or walk so it does feel like it has its limits. But hey, it's an iD game engine so it is to be expected. I'm just glad it isn't another rehash of Quake 4 though.
Over all I'm impressed and this is the fun game that will keep me entertained as far as fps goes. Finally.
I like how the pistol isn't dead accurate and it gives some challenge to the game. Of course, later on in the game, more weapons will come forth. Also the vehicles come into play very fluid and fast. It isn't a different sequence or engine for the vehicles. You can always get out and start battling or check things out. I am kinda wondering if later in the game there's death races where you get in the dune buggy and can get out and start shooting at other vehicles or battle deathmatch style on land. That would be pretty interesting lol. Kinda like that one motorcycle game on the super famicom where you could fight people that were racing :3 and even steal their bike lol
