Persona 5 Royal is a good game, but I hate how they treated Kasumi...

... as a revenue generator.

I have reached the 6th palace (Casino), and she didn't even join the mission. After reading some discussions here and there, I found that Kasumi would only join by the end game, for one final dungeon. More over, her face been featured in persona 5 royal advertisement, they even released a deluxe edition that contains her costume bundles (which is worth $14). It's totally despicable.

So far, Kasumi story is not integrated that well within the main story, her story arc is like totally optional and a fanservice. It's not that I hate the character, but I hate how Atlus treats her as a bait for the gamer, falsely advertised her a new character with a lot of screentime with a significant relation with the plot, while in fact she's just another stock anime character who will worship you and make you feel all-important so you are willing to spend another $14. The tactic is, create a cute female character that acts like the main female heroine, make her dependent on you, and lock her costumes behind a paywall so you will be pressured to buy the costume, you don't want the poor kasumi left out alone without costume do you?

It's totally a disgusting practice.

Without going into spoilers...let's just say that the new conclusion doesn't add much other than some visual references only longtime Persona fans (read: fans of the PS1 games) would get. It's certainly not worth pouring another 100 hours into. Maybe if I was a teenager or some trust fund baby who was allowed to bathe in their parents' money, then I could envision myself wasting the time it takes to get the "true ending" that isn't gonna be referenced or affect anything that happens in Persona 6 when they create that in 2026 for both the PS5 and the PS6, in addition to Persona 6 Arena, featuring characters from Persona 6 fighting against characters from Persona 5!

"What's that? Persona 3 and 4? Persona 1 and 2!? Pssh, only men in their 40's and 50's care about those characters, especially the latter!" - ATLUS, probably. (though, tbf, I could also see it being more Arc System Works simply not having the manpower to animate characters like they're doing with Guilty Gear Strive. Can you imagine a Persona fighter or even a JoJo game that looked like this?)

This isn't unique to Persona 5 Royal. The original game was lumbered with all the same kind of garbage DLC for all your cute characters to an even greater degree. As for how the new character relates to the player character, that's really nothing new either; Persona 3, 4 and 5 are all very guilty of turning their main character into a light-novel protagonist that all their friends fawn over, and even provide a character (Junpei/Yosuke/Ryuji) to be the party's whipping boy and make the player character seem even better by comparison.

I generally don't like Persona 3 and onwards because of that, and the insane amount of time spent playing school life simulator and menu simulator, going back and forth to the same locations, for hours on end, to get a little bit of dialogue from an uninteresting side character with a tangential story about petty everyday problems. Give me a mainline Shin Megami Tensei any day of the week and I'll be happy, but I don't think I could replay a modern Persona even once a year.
