Newsgroups

I just found out my ISP has free newsgroup access. I used to pay for it, decided it wasn't worth it, but if it's free then bring it on! Anyone else have Cox Communications? I'm in Southern California, wondering when they'll cap my downloads. :D First test is Fallout 3 for PC, 10+ GB with pars.

Many ISPs have free service, usually slower and has limits. Some have shut their new group services because it is used for "piracy"

They may cap if you HAMMER it too much I suggest using just a couple of threads for downloading in whatever newsgroup client you are using and/or throttle it down a bit from your max speed to avoid them capping or them throttling your connection by packet /traffic shaping :)

rule of the thumb when getting loads of stuff is to NOT GET GREEDY and to not HAMMER your downloads to death as this flags you up as an excessive user and a pointer for them to start the download throttling/cap or even disconnection!

edit for the record FALL OUT 3 PC iso is 5.51gb ...10gb is way to much you only really need 2 or 3 par recovery files otherwise it would be downloading almost twice!

Haha.. Good looking out dude. I accidentally loaded the nzb twice. 5gb is right. :D

I find that most ISP's dont carry the binaries newsgroups. They only carry text groups.

I use giganews, been with them for years. I think it's well worth the $20 p/m seeing as I get around 70-90 dvd's per month. (much cheaper than buying the same dvd's from amazon). :D

I was surprised they had binary groups, but they are there. DL speeds were around 250-300 the whole time too, better than 50-60 I was getting on torrents. I bet speeds will be even faster at off peak times.. cable modems SUCK when your whole neighborhood is home, in the evening, watching tv...

Best you can hope for are a few MP3's. I live in the UK too. You can get paid-for newsservers from around $6-$7 per month, which is only £4-£5 not a lot to pay for what you can download.

My ISP has newsgroup access too :-) only the retention is rather low (around 25 days). My ISP is very strickt on privacy and doesnt check internet traffic so nobody gets stopped pirating stuff here.

@UltraMagnus BT have a giganews hookup although some of the lower end packages I am told lack it.
news.btinternet.com
It goes by your line so no need for name/password.

3 connections at around 180 kilobytes/second. As far as I can tell (and I have tried my hardest) unlimited downloads too.

Other ISPs:

Personally $20 USD a month for giganews is more than acceptable for me.

there is, virgin media but it's crap as the retention is only a few days.

Cox has 30 days retention for binaries, plenty of time for new releases and stuff. I haven't hit any limits yet.. got fallout 3 for pc and xbox, gears of war 2, and a movie. Haven't noticed and capping or slow service, and I'm hoping this goes under the radar with the isp.

This discovery of free newsgroup access has also forced me to flash my xbox.. should get the sata card and dvds tomorrow. :D
