Hey all, Just like to give my thoughts on the 3DS.
I've had my 3DS for exactly 17 days now.
I've used it every day, playing Zelda/Rayman or using it for music or the camera etc.
Firstly the main gimmick and selling point of the 3DS - The 3D:
* The 3D effect is quite strange, when I first heard about the 3DS, I was assuming it would be out of the box 3D (Like watching a movie with 3D glasses) but instead it seems most things are in the box. Some things are out of the box 3D like the pencil that circles around in the Home Menu whilst looking at the Activity Log icon and receiving certain items in Zelda (Heart Containers, Small Keys etc.)
Play Coins:
* Honestly, I wonder why Nintendo bothered to add Play Coins, unless they get implemented into newer games, it seems like a total waste, I'm sure the majority of people who use a 3DS walk 1000 steps a day.
*If Play Coins can be used as a virtual currency in the e-shop for things like OST's or something like that in the future, that would be swell.
The 3D Camera:
* I love the 3D camera, depending on the lighting, camera angle and what not, the 3D pictures can come out pretty nicely, though I would love to see them in out of the box 3D but that's a whole other issue.
StreetPass:
* A brilliant idea, but what with the low sales, it's harder to StreetPass someone, The current uses for StreetPass aren't all that fancy but who knows maybe retail games could have the same type of mechanics as the StreetPass Quest.
* StreetPass would be a great idea if Nintendo had somehow added Wi-Fi compatibility: Connect to Wi-Fi, and download peoples profile from a Nintendo based server, perhaps?
The Launch Line-Up:
* The Launch line up of games was absolutely horrible, Nintendo should have thought it through, if it weren't for any major titles like Zelda or Super Street Fighter, the sales would have been lower.
* Nintendo needs to step up and start a new killer franchise, they have milked Mario completely dry, they need to stop relying on the big franchises to sell their consoles/handhelds and just try out their luck.
* The lack of games is bad but I'm sure the 3DS will have a great library soon enough.
The Stylus:
** This next note is entirely my personal opinion.
* I hate the design of the stylus, what the hell was wrong with the DS Lite stylus, I retractable stylus, I find myself using my fingers more often than not, and the location, it just seems to be a pain when you need to do something fast and you have no time to grab it.
The Battery Life:
* The battery life, when having the 3D Slider maxed aswell as the volume maxed, is entirely horrible.
* Although there are options like the Nyko battery pack, I'd wish there was no need for that.
The Analog stick A.K.A The nub:
* I love it, seems so much better than the D-pad. It controls so much smoother.
* Although I love the analog stick, I don't want a second, and I would much rather prefer it if Nintendo chose not to make it a necessity for 3DS games in the future.
So, I find that for my own enjoyment, Nintendo could have changed quite a few things but that's not to say that the handheld isn't an overall success in my book.
Bring on a good library of games and it could become one excellent handheld.
I'm definitely going to be buying Starfox 64 3D when it gets released (Aus) on the 15th.
