My (terrible) business idea.

Free-to-play games are more like demos. You need to pay for the cool stuff, extended functionality, or in the case of Mario RUN, the full game. Games like Angry Birds or Runescape have sort of, well, lost their touch.

My plan is to create something I doubt has been done before. Something to change real F2P gaming as we want to know it. Perhaps it would be stupid, maybe it would be good, maybe something great will come out of it. Wanna know what it is?

A free game.

(Great one, very anticlimactic.)

On the game spectrum, there are thee ways it can go.

  • A True Free game. One that is playable, but is minimal in effort, lacks appealing design, and takes a minimal amount of time to complete. Chances are, a future update would add their forgotten Google Ads API and some in-app purchases to remove said ads.
  • A F2P. Any game you find on the Play Store. Has some ads, in apps, potentially a P2W mechanic. Literally the most annoying thing. I hate them all because they took my favorite mobile games of 2015 and massacred them. WHY!? Not to mention, they pay people to leave sparkling reviews on their garbage games.
  • A paid game. Could be a port, could be a new game, regardless, it's a fully paid experience with everything you want. Some notable games that require payment are Persona, Mario, or literally any good game if you can read. We give the highest ratings to said paid games without being paid by the dev to give it good reviews.

What I want to do:
I want to create a full paid game experience without the payment part. I would lose only my time, but maybe I could create a game which is fully free, but has the feel of a game you bought for 69.99.

What it would have:
  • No IAP's.
  • Free DLC for those who want it.
  • No ads.
  • A full 200 hours of RPG experiences. Yes, I love Turn Based combat, and I would love to code it into a game for free.
  • A cost of approximately $0.00
  • Likable characters.
  • A good plot.
Why?
Free games suck now and I want to change that.

In all honesty, part of it is generosity. I've often never had enough money to buy a game I wanted, and when I get it it's always been a surprise. I want to maybe influence some to make free games that have what the list has in it. Maybe it's because I'm selfish, maybe I'm crazy, but having some decent free games out there wouldn't suck, right?

RPGs are awesome. Those raised on Open World, FPS, and loose story games (ones where the story is not of concern, like BOTW) are the ones I feel sad for. I was raised on Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and platformers.

Good luck. RPG is one of the most time consuming games to create due to the advanced mechanics, large game world and huge amounts of text/story. People trying to make this stuff for free, or without a team of skilled employees, don't realize how much work it actually is.

The problem is not really about the amount of work or the sheer difficulty of making *good* RPGs.

There is a single resource you have a finite amount of without a realistic way of gaining more of it: Time.

Seeing your profile says you're 14, you have around 4-6years, you still have the freedom of being able to spend school time on your projects (I know I know, school debate towards and against it, yeah yeah, asd asd).

But once you're out of school, your options become quite limited:
  • get a work - basically everyone does this, but there is a limit on how much you're allowed to live depending on how much time and effort you can sink into it - not even talking about not being able to find a worthy job -
  • be a freelancer - you must be doing something really worthwhile for clients to commission you, although it can be almost as risky as being a youtuber if what you're offering is not in high enough demand
  • live with your parents - sadly this is not possible in most cases, and there is a high chance you'll outlive them, so it's not a long-term solution
Considering you're just 14 (if it's correct), I have omitted some options for the sake of your sanity.

But yeah, all this wall of text above is just so I could tell that once you're out of school, you won't be able to dedicate enough time to the project, unless you find a way to get the basic necessities and resources to stay alive and be able to work on the project.

The reason people say "oh, you don't wish to become adult" is not because they oh-so-fucking liked school, but because they were able to "waste" their time on what they wanted to do while still getting food and shelter. I would never in my life would go back to ANY school. I'm much better at learning things myself than having to WASTE months (and a lot of money!) on shitty schools when I could learn the same amount in 1-2weeks on my own in a very fun way in a way where I'll remember it for a life, not just for a few days after school ends.

tl;dr: you don't have enough time to make what you want to that level of quality, and our old beloved games are fucked by both big corp (by being "greedy"), and society (for allowing them to be greedy and exploitative)

@The Real Jdbye I can always cut corners and use RPG MAKER MZ. I do understand the intricacies of making a game. I've done a crap ton of research on this sort of stuff (even though my age plays a huge factor in believability)

@Sono Yes, I am 14. I completely realize how much time it'll take by myself, but everyone can dream right? I have a few people I can call it so it wouldn't be by myself if I didn't want to. I come from a long line of nerds and have a good amount of connections. After school (and a two year hiatus) it'll become a hobby project if I'm still working at that point.

NOTE: An RPG is the ultimatum. I want to make one at some point that doesn't suck crap or look generic. I have everything planned out for when I do. I can always work on smaller free games (once again, diverting away from the trifecta) until I have the experience to make one. This is a life goal, not something to do immediately.

I'm starting to lose faith at this point. I may as well delete the thread.

RPG Maker takes care of the engine, you still need to create unique characters and a story, a large game world, unique skills/spells and enemies and bosses and all of the other things a RPG should have. It doesn't save you as much time/effort as you might think.

When I already have unique characters, a storyline, and a preplanned world, it should be a breeze. I’ve been planning a storyline since I was 10.

you have a good heart, and there needs to be more people like you in the world. but there needs to be at least some way to make a profit, even if it's a small one.
