My job is in limbo

Well my job went to BS again, why? I'll explain, it's a bit long-winded. So, yes, I have a job, but I don't have work
to do, if that makes sense.

So, what I was doing was working in a warehouse, which wasn't permanent and being leased out to us to unload and deliver bread into vans/trucks. What my job was meet the delivery driver four times per week to unload bread for the other drivers to distribute to the stores around the county I live in (and in the neighboring counties). While this has been happening, a new location for a bakery and loading dock was being built about 43 miles (70 km), northwest of where I was working. Well, the lease for the old building expired, and all the workers now work up at the new location. What was supposed to happen, is what my unloading job switch to merchandising, which would be going to the stores where our brand of bread was delivered and count the bread, make sure it's faced properly and send the info to my boss. However, this is where things get tricky, see, he was supposed to have a system where I merchandise five times a week, and share one of the vehicles with another merchandiser.

This hasn't happened, I've been out of work for six days, ever since they relocated to the new warehouse. To make it worse, if I want to get more hours, consistently, I would have to travel 86 miles per day, to just two hours' work, only to spend an hour each way to drive. My care has 134,000 miles on, to drive 1600 miles a month on the freeway would add far more wear and tear, causing me to replace the engine, transmission, etc. To sum this all up, my job, which I thought would improve once I got it back, hasn't improved at all. I was never given the merchandising hours as I was promised by my boss, I shouldn't have to travel one hour to work each day to only do p>

Screw that company, and screw them for not promising me more hours merchandising. I've been so stressed and anxious that I broke down in tears a couple of days ago. I've half a mind to drive up to the warehouse, flip them off with both middle fingers as I drive by for all to see. I've asked in person, as well as texted my boss as a reminder to give definitive information and facts about my future at this company.

Maybe a job in the air force could work out for you? If not, I'm sure there are lots of places hiring for the season. Amazon has a few positons in places for warehouse or customer service--you wouldn't need to worry about driving for the latter. Maybe FedEx/UPS might work for you? Maybe there's a temp agency within 40 miles of you? You could even check out Motor Club of America. I haven't tried it myself, but MCA seems to work for some people.

@KiiWii, no, no contract.

@H1B1Esquire I'd rather avoid the military related field if I can, something close by preferably. There is a UPS store nearby, however, looking for working in the warehouse. There are some temp agencies as well,I
can give them a call and ask what they have.

@VinsCool Yeah, it's just, my boss said "Oh I have something you can do on Monday" and only because I texted him, only Monday. He mentioned nothing of other days next week.

Yeah, get in there A.S.A.P--those jobs usually go pretty quickly. The AF isn't bad--it's actually better than the other branches. Either you're "Chair Force" or Tom Cruise. The best part is, you get a decent amount of respect and viable skills. Hell, you could even do worthwhile tech jobs in the AF.

The only thing is, I don't want to go into combat, drafted into a war, or any kind of weaponry, that's why I don't want to go into any military, but that's just me. IDK.

They have other positions you could try for. I mean, it'd be pretty dumb to send the guy who fixes stuff into battle. They also have a decent sign-on bonus, usually $15,000.00.

I know a guy who went in to AF and all he does is translate. He stays in the U.S., and he said it was smooth sailing after basic. I know another guy who just hands out meds. Never went to med school, no plans of being a doctor--he literally just hands out pills on base.

I'll definitely need to think about it, and oddly enough, there's a major Air Force base about 60 mi north from where I live, a lot of things to consider, I don't want to jump the gun quite yet. If that sign on bonus is that much, I would immediately be able to pay off my student loan.

It's definitely worth looking into. You also get dental, health, vision, and other nice things. I think the cutoff age is 39, but it could be 27, depending, but it's still better than Army or Navy. I'd check with your nearest recruiter.

All things considered, it's a decent fall back option, seeing as the old fall back option was real estate, but that's looking a little iffy these days, unless you know someone already in the business who'll help you get leads and even then, it takes a few months after being certified+selling a home to see any money. Not to mention, you need about $5,000.00 to pay for all the classes and licenses.

I have about 6000-7000 dollars that I'm in debt, currently 32 years old, actually, so I've a good while for the cutoff. *sigh* The only other fear is how long I'd be away from home, friends, family, you know? I need to take that into consideration.

You'd be away for about six weeks, though you'd still have to sign up and have time to get things in order. I think they usually start people around this time and in Spring.

It's a nice trade-off--six weeks to get yourself out of debt, have extra funds, and chances to advance yourself with a career or work your ass off for a few months trying to balance everything between life and debt.

Hell, I think with the AF, you might be able to severely consolidate your school debt. If you do things right and look into all the services offered, there are a lot of perks. Even more so when your life isn't being risked.

I'll need to think about that as well, six weeks is a long time, to be sure, would there be some kind of heartless drill sergeant making one feel insignificant? I don't want that, either. I'm sorry I'm still on the fence, it's a lot to consider, and yes, it would pay for my debt completely, and then some. I'll do some more research, however.

Definitely look into it. I don't think you'll get the Full Metal Jacket treatment, but there is a lot of yelling, no doubt. It would be a little weird if they didn't yell. I'd take a few weeks of yelling over months of aggravation due to other people being people.

Don't worry about it too much, you've got a few options, you just need to find what works for you.

Yeah, I'll need to write it out, not thinking straight today, just a lot of anxiety and stress from the uncertainty. Sure, he has something lined up Monday morning, but after that, it doesn't sound particularly encouraging.

Must be a vendor for Sara Lee or Orowheat... When I used to work at a grocery store I was responsible for a multitude of jobs including bakery, floral, general merchandise, backroom, night shift, and occasionally dealing with vendors. Everyone of those vendors from Sara Lee or Orowheat were pissed off all the time... I'd say you dodged a bullet, just take all that you've learned from your job and apply yourself to something new...You'll be alright

I still should at least show up Monday morning, as my boss needs me to deliver bread display racks to a local supermarket not too far from where I live. The name of the company is called Harper's Homemade, based out of Pocatello, but distributes to where I live and its surrounding areas. Pardon my french, but the situation I'm in, is bullshit, I'm not going to travel 80-90 miles a day to work one hour as I've stated before. The problem is, most other jobs here are call centers, which are hellholes for bitching whining customers who hate you and the world and want to make you feel less than human. Oh the stories of hell I could tell you about working in the call centers, heh. But I digress. There are dishwasher jobs, janitorial, and the ultimate job I really want to work for, would be the USDA or DNR/DWR working with animals. It's just..I mean, all I got from my boss is "In the long run, you'll be merchandising", which to me, means "Oh, we'll figure something out in the near future". I need structure, I need consistency, none of this beating around the bush crap.

Edit I'm gonna be brutally honest and admit I feel unmotivated to showing up Monday morning.

Wow, your boss is a prick. Understandable if there's nothing he can do, but for driving so far out, I wonder if you can screw him on taxes?

Maybe you should take the trip, as you might have an epiphany?

He's..not so much as a prick, it feels more like, well, I'm technically the bottom of the totem pole, everyone else delivers bread to stores, there are a couple of other people in the same boat as me. I don't know how they're taking it, but for me, I'm not taking this very well at all. I've half a mind to not show up Monday morning, which may actually get me fired. Damn, I'm sorry, I just...ugh. What the hell am I supposed to do?

Like I said in the OP, originally, the warehouse was here, but on a lease. The lease expired and they have another building for bread, which will be a bakery next year. For now, it's just a housing for the bread. I apologize I didn't make the bakery part clear. If I lived in that city, sure, but that city is a hellhole.

It's cool. I'd still show up for work because if you don't show up and you try to use this job as a reference, he could say a multitude of things that could negatively impact your chances of another job.

I had a boss who would call me in her office before my shift started, talked to me about what she wanted done in the day, and because I was in her office, I thought she was understanding to the point of "I literally see you here, in my office; you're on time.", but when I started another job and used my previous as a reference, they said "Your previous employer said you would often show up late.", and that taught me two things: 1. Don't end up in a situation that you can't defend yourself from. 2. Don't use that job as a reference.

I took a look into offers from USDA and it seems like they want to hire a lot of biologists, geneticists, technologists, pathologists, and other scientists. There are a couple of jobs that don't seem too bad, but the jobs seem to be placed in odd locations.

No matter what you decide to do, be comfortable with the decision.

Your best bet is Amazon. It's actually fun working there, and Amazon is looking for lots of workers in its new warehouses around the world. Hope you find a job soon! :D

TBH you should go (back) to college and get another degree. Will widely increase your chances of getting a job with great job security.
