My idea for this retro thread

Being a bit of a retro freak, I've been wanting to do some sort of fortnightly thread, like the release threads but more retro.

Video Game Releases: Week of... for example "4th March 1991". I just pick a week in history at random and write up the games that were released. There are two things stopping me from doing this. 1. Would anyone be interested? 2. How can I discover what was released in one week? I tried wiki but they only seem to cover "notable" releases. Perhaps just covering a month would be easier.

Another one would be to just pick one or two games for each of Nintendo's consoles and do a mini review for each. They don't have to be particular classics just ones that are better than average.

Any thoughts or ideas, or even help will be welcome.

Sounds great, instead of a random week or month though, how about the week/month we're currently in?

If it was another time of the year, like January then I would but October to December were always big game floods, even in the 80's due to Xmas. Perhaps I could just write up the more notable or ones that deserve attention, but then again where could I find such data?

Well that would be great and all about how many years included? 10 years? Only week/month if 10 years ago? Every game during that week/month of the past 30 years? Needs to be limited or way to much work for any single person.

http://dmarie.com/timecap/ is a decent site however it doesnt show popular games just game systems :(

That's a cool idea.. but indeed hard :/

You can easily find the release date of a specific game on Wikipedia or gamefaqs, but finding what games were released on a specific day.. that's hard :/

For each month is easier, but since your threads are weekly.. what about reviewing a game related to one of the week releases? For exemple.. a review of the original Space Invaders when Space Invaders Extreme is out.. or Final Fantasy II when Final Fantasy Tactics Chocobo Chronicles VII: Cid's Revenge is out.. or if no game apply to that a game related to that week in special, like a review of Independece Day on the week of the 4th July, a review of a Spider Man game when a new Spider Man movie is out, a review of Warcraft II on Orc's birthday week.. I think you got the idea :P

I've got dozens of C+VG's from '89 up until '92. I regularly read through them again to bring back that nostalgic feeling. So I like the idea of retro gaming, but it's a difficult approach when you want to focus on what came out on a certain day of a certain year.

It would be better I think if you did it the way certain new magazines do it, just focusing on a certain great game from a certain year and do a little review. We've got a mag here in the Netherlands called N-gamer and every issue they have a little retro section and I've enjoyed many of them, including Tetris on the Gameboy and Super Mario World on the Snes. It's great to read some stories behind some of those games and what they thought of them back then and what we think of them now, compared to other games.

I would very much like to see a nice retro section, maybe a blog were you pick a random game from a certain era that had something to offer.

Sounds good.. I'll look forward to reading the different topics. Maybe you should use Calafas's idea, though.

Throwing this out there how about this. Do a little thing on game from x month from the past x years.

Let me explain:

Say if you pick 10 years...
This month is September...

So you take 1 game from the month of september from each year... So first start out with 1998 pick a game from any system do a little write up same for 1999.

However you do not have to do it like that but say you pick 10 years... month of september instead of doing 1998-2008 you do 1988-1998.

Games can be selected from any system even PC. Might be a bit easyer then picking a bunch of games from a certian week of a certian year.

I might have to explain better if so let me know.

There was a blog (here) by opcode32 a couple of months back where this sort of thing but for the scene (BBS logs mainly)

edit: found one.

I might as well also float another idea, the GBA is now dead and with roms being small perhaps a highlight of a couple of games every month or so and a short paragraph or two, a lot of the newer members (me too) seem to have missed out on the GBA which is a shame as there are some awesome games there.

I love retro games. i would check it like i check the Release this week threads.

Everyone around my place is like"shooters and "M" rated games"

i love the retro and arcade stuff.

What I think I'll do is maybe a thread with ten games written up for various consoles/handhelds/computers. I did like Cockroachmans idea of writing up the games appropriate to whatever games, movies, events are going on in month so I could do that or even just a theme like sci-fi, horror, sport whatever.

Another thread I'd like to do is a GBA one, I'll pick a Fortnight/Month at random and write up what was released. Its fairly easy to do this as I'll just follow when the games were dumped instead of actual store dates. This might highlight some games that may not be classics but might have been fun to play anyway. I could also maybe add GBC games in there too and go by the dump dates.

Who doesn't? Again, I can't wait to read about some of the great classics there are out there.

Speaking of meatballs, what's the deal with meatball sandwich? How can people eat those? It's ROUND. Trying to bite those in a sandwich is a challenge. It's easier to eat a burger stacked with toppings. :ninja:
