I wanted to make this post to let off some steam about how I'm affected by ignorance constantly nearly everytime I speak to someone from outside the uk.
I find a lot of people from North America think England = Britain, You might think so what? I suppose Canadians feel the same way when people act like they are Americans in Europe. However my fellow countrymen (Scotland) didn't fight for "Britain" to be branded english. How would an american feel if they get called mexican or Canadian constantly?
One example that pissed me off the other week was that paper headline from the new york times that basically said the USA "beat"Britain at a football match, When infact they "beat" England.
I mean what do people actually think? do they really think Britain = England? or if Scotland, N.Ireland, Wales are so crappy they don't deserve to be put in the same group with England? Or do they not even know what Britain is? I really can't tell if they know or are just clueless.
I could go on all day about this but I can say it really gets under my skin when my Nation does something and then gets branded English.
Now I want to move on to Ignorance in the UK.
I find the media and a lot of english people I speak to seem to think the same as North Americans to a certain extent. Let me make an example there was a Tennis tournement on earlier this year and it was a Country tournement where nations all group together and compete for points. Well It was a "British" tennis team however Andy Murrey couldn't make it so all of a sudden the media started referring it to the "English tennis team" when infact they where playing for the UK.
Let's move along a month.... Andy Murrey is playing a tennis match and the very same Media start branding him "British" Now don't get me wrong I'm proud to be British, I don't have a problem with him being called that however if the media are going to do what they did a few month before call him scottish, You can't have your cake and eat it.
This is just the icing on the cake. As a lot of you know I helped the ds-x team out with fixing broken cards and moding their forum, don't get into that in this please. Well One guy I worked along side with I got to know really well and we talk everyday I even think of him as a real life m8, he wasn't a major part of the team, just minor like me. Anyway we where talking one day about Scotland and he replied to me "It's not like that in Britain" I mean
Even some English people don't know what Britain means? I could be wrong could someone enlighten me?
Now guys let's take a look at this, The British Navy flag
Scottish, N.Irish and welsh people also fight for the British Navy yet 3/4 of the flag is the England flag? I don't get it. Everytime I see it makes my blood boil.
