I should start by saying that I'm okay now, but the last month or so was pretty bad for me. I'm just now starting to return to normal. I don't know if it was COVID-19 but I think it's very likely that it was. I'm a very healthy guy, I've been straightedge my whole life, I eat healthy and I've never been sick for this long. I live in the Bay Area, California where it's suspected that it's already widespread. Based on everything I've seen around here, I 100% believe this is true.
It all started a little over a month ago. A few of my family members had been sick and I guess I got it from them. One of them had to be put on an IV for dehydration and another said it was one of the worst flus they've ever had. My sibling's SO also got really sick for several weeks. Likewise, it was in the top 3 worst flus (if it was that) that I've had in my whole life.
Symptoms came on fairly quickly, literally within hours from feeling perfectly okay to feeling like crap. The next day I developed a fever and it was really bad for maybe 3 days. Once the fever broke I developed some kind of bacterial infection in my mouth (dry mouth symptoms), which they said was likely a yeast infection. I was given a mouth rinse for this and it went away after a week. But the entire time I've had consistent chest congestion and a dry cough. A few weeks after the flu "ended", I began to have night chills and a low-grade fever (around 99.5 F) which came and went at random. I saw a doctor twice for this and told them everything. They asked me about COVID-19 related symptoms, etc, but they said they weren't able to test anyone. I was prescribed antibiotics for the persistent congestion and they theorized that it might have been bacterial bronchitis, though they didn't seem to test for that either... On my last visit a few days ago they already seemed a bit stretched compared to my first visit the week before. I've been hearing ambulance sirens more often in recent days as well.
Presently I'm feeling a little better every day. The congestion is a little less every day but I still cough now and then. I've been practicing self-isolation as much as possible and haven't seen my girlfriend in over a month, which has been very hard for me, but I'm putting everyone else ahead of me. I don't understand how selfish some other people can be by going out while sick.
I believe the reason it was so bad for me is that my vitamin D levels were very low. I've read that vitamin D is crucial for respiratory infection recovery. I'm now taking supplements. I advise you all to start taking them too if you can get a hold of them. There was a big study that said it reduces infection rates by 70%.
I plan to wait until testing is available to everyone and get tested ASAP, but most likely it's already out of my system by now. I believe there must be thousands, if not tens of thousands of people in my area who have already slipped under the radar like myself.
