Haiti Detains Americans

Original Story

IMO, seems like they deserved it... They thought they could go to another country, then transport orphans without permission? How suspicious (and stupid ) is that?!

Haiti has been dealing with child traffickers for a long time. Now a group of religious Americans goes over there and does the exact thing some traffickers do: Bus orphans to a "orphanage" that doesn't exist. The article says the Americans were going to start an orphanage, so why transport orphans if there isn't an orphanage yet?

At first,I thought "OMG, they jailed innocent Americans!", but now that I've read the article, all I can think is "THIS is one reason why the world thinks badly of us..."

What do you guys think?

There should be an age limit for aid workers like 30 or so because most are young and reckless mainly students.

No it's not that they were Americans, it's that they were fucking idiots from a church group.

Man if it isn't the Muslims making you hate religion for all the violence, it's various Christian groups making you hate religion for all the fucking idiots.

Why does everyone care so much about them being American? Countless people were killed and when a few Americans are arrested it is news.

VERY good point... Yay modern media!

Any American that helped Haiti in any way is stupid. The entire world hates us and we're still being the good guys? We should take advantage of the fact that everyone hates us and start to imperialise again.

TBF I think the reason why this is getting attention is becasue when the earthquake happened, it was beleived that children would be kidnapped and this is really one teh first known cases of it. I think it's it's becasue their from the West so if they were British people; the headline would have been "Haiti detain British citizens." Or something along those lines.

I hope you're being sarcastic. This isn't about the "good guys," it's about human compassion and helping people who really need it.

that's just unworkable, there's a growing number of over 50s who are doing volunter work in foreign countries, therefore you limit experience and talent.

Which is exactly what they did...
Somehow I don't think the children would have been better off in America...

It solely pisses me off because some hard-working Canadians and Americans are actually doing some good there (Doctors without borders, the red cross, and etc...), and these people are wasting people's resources and energy by being stupid like this?

I want to know what gave them this idea for fucks sake. This is not a good idea anyhow - no papers, no nothing? Don't do anything - otherwise people will waste precious energy and resources on detaining you.

The fact they are religious just makes it worse. It's a fucking knee-jerk reaction to things.

Nah, getting a free education, health care for the poor, housing for the poor, food for the poor etc, etc would be really really crappy. I'd rather live in a poor country that gets completely flattened by an earthquake and has such a lack of food that they eat mud.

I was being serious by the way.

I'll reply to you as if you were serious, but I highly hope you are joking (and I'm pretty sure are).

No, the entire world does not hate us. People, including some Americans, just hate how our Congress has no spine when it comes to politics; they let the President do whatever he pleases. Shit, if they would actually do something they were supposed to, we might be better off as a country, but they don't. For example, the president doesn't have the power to start a war! That's the Congress' power! Congress hasn't declared war since WWII, if I recall correctly. All they do is agree with the president so they can get voted back in.

Anyway, the world's opinion of America as a whole has changed positively since Obama got into office. But even he turned out to have a pretty crappy first year. Some Americans are arrogant, ignorant, intolerant, and over-patriotic yes, but not all. Most countries do not hate all Americans, because they are not ignorant of the fact that there are people in their country like that too. It's just that ours always find a way to get into the news...

It wasn't so long ago that the trafficking of people was legal in America... it was called slavery...

These days it's called working-below-minimum-wage slavery... or sex-slavery...

Who is going to look out of those kids in America? Not the profiteers who bring them in, that's for sure...

Most likely because you ran out of arguments...

If you think that anyone who smuggles children across borders is a "good guy", you might was to consider picking up a newspaper... or getting out more...

Imposing your will on those who are most vulnerable is hardly charitable...

There's no 'argument' lol. I said they were stupid for helping at all. And you're right, I would much rather live in Haiti than America. There's much too many sex-slaves and work-under-mimimum-wage-slaves here.

Basically, I'm agreeing with you ;)

Slavery is work without wages or rights. Working below minimum wage is probably much better than what's over there. But that's beside the point. First of all, keep in mind that these are children that probably don't speak English, where do you expect them to get a job? What clothes are they expected to wear for work? Are they even old enough?

Sex slavery? Eh...I'm not so sure. It goes on in America, but barely, and it's usually in the south.

I'm positive that homeless shelters would take them in.

@Bixbite: Stop trolling...

Once again, I post a news story or something I find interesting, and people turn it into a flamewar or stupid argument.

Wtf, people... :hateit:

...Maybe I have the magic touch :glare:

Well, I'd assume when you post something in the blog section, you want some kind of opinions/response. For reference, in the future, if you don't want people commenting, you can lock your own blog topics in your blog settings page.

Whether you intended it to or not, this topic touches on some contentious issues. Namely religion and "America yay or nay". Add to that a forum full of 14 year olds from around the world and you have a recipe for, well, this.
