Guessing people's gender (wrong) in forums...based on their avatar

Due to the anonymous nature of a forum such as this (people have avatars and use nicknames) , it's not easy to get the gender of other members right...I decided to use the avatar as a clue and assumed that all people with a female character avatar were girls...

It works in some cases (for example: Aurora Whright), but not always...

P.S: is Rinnegatamante male or female? because they have a girl character avatar so I assumed female but I tend to be wrong about that...

I honestly don't care if another user would be male or female. If I know, I know, and would be using the right pronoun. If I don't, I'd refer them to their user name. I don't consider the profile pictures helpful at all, except noticing who are furries ;) Haha

What's funny is that it's coming from someone with a different gender's avatar :P
But I understand what you mean by "imagining" someone being male or female just by looking at his avatar, as I also pictured you as male just by seeing your avatar and I didn't read your username (or I would have remembered who you are and the pictures you posted in the other thread).

I usually recognize members by their avatar only, and when they are changing them it's really confusing for me. I rarely look at the username to identify someone.
It was really confusing to follow a conversation when everyone had a ToonLink as avatar ! haha

When I reply to someone, I usually talk as if it's a male, unless I'm really sure it's not, but even by habit I'm using "his" or "him" instead of "her".
Some user are sometime taking it badly (my only reported post is from someone who didn't like me addressing her with "him", while I usually talk neutrally referring to someone as "the user"). But I guess that user is having a fixation on gender, which I can understand, but it wasn't an attack, just me talking neutrally.
For information, being French is probably why I address everyone with Male, as the word "user" is masculine gender in French.

What I read not long ago on gbatemp is someone said she liked this place as girls weren't treated differently here.
Everyone is kind and helpful, without thinking that "there's no girl on internet" and a girl need to be stalked because it's rare !
Everybody just answer nicely and don't bother with gender. We all like the same things, and video games are for everyone :)

I always refer to someone on the internet as they or them, as long as I don't know their gender for sure. If I do know their gender, I will refer to them with the appropriate pronouns instead.

Who cares? If somebody is really going to be deeply offended online because I guessed their gender incorrectly then they shouldn't really be online.
