Guessing people's gender (wrong) in forums...based on their avatar

Due to the anonymous nature of a forum such as this (people have avatars and use nicknames) , it's not easy to get the gender of other members right...I decided to use the avatar as a clue and assumed that all people with a female character avatar were girls...

It works in some cases (for example: Aurora Whright), but not always...

P.S: is Rinnegatamante male or female? because they have a girl character avatar so I assumed female but I tend to be wrong about that...

I generally don't think of anybody on the Internet as one gender or another. Just words on a screen, with a chosen picture to represent their identity. Words (in English at least) don't have genders, so I treat what people say based on what they say.

And every time someone asked me my gender, if it even mattered, I would identity as a cat on a keyboard. Does it give my words any more or less significance? Not one bit.

I must confess I didn't know about the clicking on the profile picture trick...

I assumed other people called everybody else he out of convenience and that there was no way of being sure...

if you're afraid to trigger someone like its Tumblr around here, a good alternative is to use them or they, when referring to someone you don't know.

Just assume everyone's a dude until you get corrected. I guarantee you'll be right more often that way than by use of avatars.

Just in case some people might get offeded if they are misgendered or something...

then be offended about them being offended!
and call me, i will be offended as well

seriously, if they are offended for that small thing, they should just think about what they are doing with their life...
seriously. if you assume a girl is a dude she gets offended, if you acknowledge she is a girl you are a pervert and stalker
you can't win there

Yes ;o; he did indeed copy me. Trying to leech off some of my greatness. Jk

Uh @Supster131 did the same!

@osm70 There is only two genders so that's impossible you will get misgendered there isn't anyway out if it

Unless I actually know someone's gender, I tend to avoid gender pronouns, in the style of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games (the English ones; the French PSMD translation assumes the player to be male and the partner to be female).

@AyanamiRei1 Sex is biological, gender is social. You're thinking of Sex. And even then, there are cases of abnormalities in the x/y chromosomes. Those can be considered different sexes, as they express things differently and they are not one or the other.

And gender is social, so there can be plenty of genders, depending on how particular you want to be about how your particular feelings and emotions are expressed and understood by others. How important it is to you, in other words.

*off topic* Never played a persona game and unless it comes on 3DS at some point I probably never won't...

*offtopic reply* that's a shame, they're definitely worth playing. Persona Q is on 3DS but requires you to have played the previous games. (PS2/Vita)

I don't own a Vita (too costly (I think), and we don't have a PS2 anymore...
Besides I don't think it's easy to find those games in France...
