I've had my 3DS since launch, and a few weeks ago my R-button stopped working.
Sent it in to Nintendo, got it back about a week later. Not only did they fix the R-button, but they also did the L-button too. All free of charge.
They also did a full cleaning of my handheld, and made it look literally brand new. I'm surprised how awesome their customer service is.
Anyone who is debating whether to send in their console/handheld to Nintendo, I would definitely recommend taking advantage of the warranty instead of fixing it yourself.
