Let me repeat - I hate the eyestrain that goes along with the 3DS. (I've played a little bit of Street Fighter 4, and it was like - let me mess with your eyes.) My sweet spot for the 3DS happened to be straight in front of me, at arm's length. It took me about half the level to find out my sweet spot, in terms of the 3DS screen capabilities.
The demo itself was pretty sweet. One full length level terminating in a mecha type boss fight. It seems like classic Starfox with falling pillars and dodging enemy fire. The scenery is beautiful, and I just wanted to stop and let myself look at the area that I was fighting in. Enemies are varied, and they actually look like ships, instead of polygons glued together. You have 3 partners, Peppy, Slippy and someone else helping you out. Slippy has been toned down completely, and is no longer that annoying. The boss fight itself wasn't that spectacular. It was the standard mecha that you could damage from the front (it's guns), and then you had to hit it from the back. (It took a very small number of hits it kill it.) The normal blasters on Fox's ship are pretty rapidfire now, and the charge shot still retains that feel. (However, I found myself using the blasters a lot more.)
About the hardware - I love the fact that Nintendo has finally given us an analog stick on our gaming console. It's not as stiff as the PSP one - but it's still tiny. I have tiny woman hands, and my thumb kept slipping off of it. Prolonged gameplay will probably make it worse. The 3DS feels tiny in my hands. I'm wondering if this is the weirdness that is me getting used to having my DS encased in a protective case.
FanExpo Extras:
- met Deanna Troi - had her sign the last photo of the entire cast during the shoot of Nemesis. (I'm afraid I was a bit starstruck upon meeting her and probably resembled a bloody Wookie with my grunts.)
- bought a hand-sewn bag with a felt picture of Princess Leia on it (awesome!)
- bought a copy of Issue Zero of the Devil's Panties (also had the author, Jennie sign it!)
- bought a copy of TinStar for the SNES --> it is awesome, although, slightly hard! (Ugh, level 1-2!)
