Ducking bushfires

I finally booked Wolgal Hut last year as soon as the dates were possible to book after missing out a few years in a row. I was so excited - I love the snow, it symbolises childhood innocence and happiness and fun to me as I grew up on the side of a mountain where it snowed every year quite a lot, and was so looking forward to snowshoeing through pristine forest, watching the birds, building snowmen, maybe having another go at cross country skiing in a remote untouched beautiful place, and being there for my nieces' first experiences of snow, perhaps the beginning of many happy memories.

Now it is gone. Burned to the ground. FUCK FUCKING BUSHFIRES

This is what it is supposed to look like

Holy sheep shit--I think we can all agree, that's the smallest issue--thankfully, your house didn't burn down...unless it did, I've been out of the loop-ish, in which case, my condolences.

But, on the other side, they...did refund you, right? Or is this a project they hope to remedy by the time winter comes to Australia?

@H1B1Esquire yes you are right, hundreds of homes burned down so I have had it pretty good in comparison. I am just sad. I am sure I will get a refund but I am more sad that this historical building is gone forever. I read someone say that the kosziusko national park has a policy of not rebuilding huts - I hope they're wrong. But even if they do rebuild, the history is gone. Lots of other huts were burned down too. Some built by early settlers to the region or explorers. I wonder how the snowsports resorts like Thredbo, Perisher, and Selwyn have fared ... I am guessing Selwyn is gone, because this place was near it.

I am out of Words for this Scenario......:(

Maybe I know the Feeling of "lost something"....but this is....indescribably.....
So many Animals and vital, breathing Plants lost.....the Wild Life in big Parts destroyed...
So many Peoples lost their Homes....Parts of their "Lifes".....

I only "remember" as little 5 Year old Child, after a very big Floading and Inundation, they were Buildings and Things "vanished" after the Water has gone......
I do not know what is more cruel........water or fire.....

But I maybe can understand your resentment.....WHAT or better WHO the Fire caused.......Scientific Explanations and Studies or not.......
Behind it is always the human being as the cause.......

And the Consequences in this Case are very, very massive........,maybe not to see at the Moment...not to feel at the Moment....

Well, that's good (for your house not getting caught in the path of destruction), but I have a feeling there are going to be massive problems ahead that will change the dynamic... it's going to a whole new level. I have a feeling that (one day) they will rebuild, but it may not be for years upon years.

Actually, if I ever get out to my cousin, I'll see about contacting some people who might be interested in the idea.

A fun idea for you: take the refund and go see They Might Be Giants. They're doing a tour (as you probamayadefinitely know)...I think they leave the city in February and seemingly won't be in NY (Ithaca, ehhhh) until May 5th, but the tickets seem to be fairly priced.

Maybe you can try your hand at swaying and request for them to do an aid concert in Australia?

That would be awesome if they did an aid concert! What a great idea.
If they don't, well I'll just add the refund to my donation pile I guess. The wildlife organisations in Victoria are getting a little hard done by as everyone is donating to WIRES, which is a NSW organisation. I'll probably send it there.
Edit: their current tour is going for months so I doubt they would come. The organisers would probably only want really big names that have wide appeal as well

Personally, I'd keep your money and donate your time. Even if you organize an event to help bury animals, plant trees, set up a webpage for people to have easy access of newly collected information...I mean, you could even donate your time directly to WIRES--I'm sure they'd want a web designer to help get the message to the world.

" The organisers would probably only want really big names that have wide appeal as well"

Don't doubt it--anything can happen in this world.
Besides, I'm sure if you wrote them a really heartfelt letter, maybe when they're done touring in May, They Might Stop By. Thinking logically, the label they're signed to might want more exposure and what better way to get a larger audience than to position yourself where the world is looking? Not all muscians are business-minded, but all people in business are in it for the money. Period. No one goes into business saying, "I really want to struggle, fail miserably and have more debt than dollars when I go into business!"

If you proposition the label directly, they might even postpone a show, while adding other acts that don't have a big fanbase.

I'd do it myself, but I've got a lot of obligations already...I'll write a blog about it, eventually.

Had the fires come scarily close to me at the end of last year, but thankfully stopped. It's a terrible situation and I feel for everyone affected

Oh that's scary @Milenko, whereabouts are you?
There was some fear that the dunns road and bugtown fires might move into the ACT in early Jan but luckily it didn't happen, then there were a few days of cooler temperature
Edit: there's a new one called Mary Hill that's quite close to ACT now, about 30km from the urban edge. In 2003 the fires moved 20km/hr

Sorry to hear. Australia is unfortunately just a preview of what's to come for the rest of the world if we don't get our damn act together, and quick.

About refunds, get that checked out. Sometimes when it comes to big things like this, refunds are a no-go. Force majeure tend to be something that can get iffy with refunds and such things.

@Quantumcat Northern NSW, on the coast so at least I can get to the beach if anything ever happens but it's still scary
