DS Lite mysteriously vanished...

I'm pretty sure that my brother stole it (stealing electronics of mine seems to be a bad habit of his), but if he did, he's hiding it reasonably well. In any case the hinge is pretty much completely compromised anyway and I'm wondering if it's worth waiting for a 3DS or whether I should grab another DS Lite. Suggestions?

I don't understand this topic.

I mean, you can just get your DS back and get a 3DS so you have both but you're deciding to get another lite when that one supposedly is fine other than just the hinge?

Getting my Lite back is pretty much pointless considering how much damage it's taken. I'm just wondering if it's worth picking another DS up versus just waiting for the backwards compatible 3DS.

It depends on how much cash you have I guess. If for some reason I was completely w/o a DS I'd be down to the store that day to buy one, but I have the cash to do so and still get a 3DS if it were launched the next day.

If I couldn't afford it, I suppose the decision might be a little tougher but I'd still probably buy a new DS. I've had my share of launch day consoles, and I'm always out of games to play for the new system before the next wave of titles is released for it. If it wasn't for backwards compatibility my original DS fat would have stayed at home in its early days while I carted around my GBA instead, because once I finished all the launch titles I was interested in there wasn't anything new in time for my next fix and I went back to GBA games until there were more DS games. That's pretty much the way it is on any new console.

Depending on how long it will take you to get a 3DS, you probably won't miss out on the launch titles (they'll still be on the shelves later) you'll just have to wait a bit for them. You won't have to suffer through the lean early days. The price may go down or there will be used units for sale by then if you want a cheaper unit. And a host of other reasons are out there to wait if cash is short.

OTOH the 3DS is pretty compelling, I'm pretty excited about it anyway. Hell yes I'll have a launch day unit. I'd BETTER not have to wait til March, I'll die. 3D w/o glasses? AW3S0M3!!! Did you see those graphix?! And slightly more seriously there's some awesome launch titles I can't wait to play, 3D or no. Etc...

And as I said early, a month or two later I'll be back to my DS games until the next wave is released.

And at the minimum it will be a while before we see a 3DS flash cart, at worst we never will.

1)Get it back from your brother
2)Repair the hinge to mint condition
3)Use it until the 3DS comes out
4)then trade the lite in for a discount on the 3DS

Thats what I'm doing with my lite :D
except the hinge part cos mine is perfectly fine

Buy a DSlite then your bro will be left with a bad DSlite, and always leave it at one place where you put it and if it gets taken by whoever was at your house go to them. Or wait for a 3DS and hide it from your bro.

What you need to do is get 4 things.

1: A 3DS when it comes out
2: A metal case with a glass front that you can hang from a wall.
3: a small shelf.
4: a baseball bat.

Buy your 3DS and be happy. Paint "break in case of brother stealing 3DS" on the glass of the case.
Put the baseball bat inside.
Put the shelf below the case.
Keep your 3DS on the shelf.

If your brother steals your 3DS, break glass, grab bat, and beat the shit out of your brother until the bloody pile of ass that is him tells you where your 3DS is, and he promises never to steal it again, or he'll get more of the same.

Fool proof.

I'd say get another DSlite.....maybe not a new one, but at least a used one that's in good shape, especially if you're into flashcarts.

If you get a chance to check one out before buying it, put that homebrew app called "DiagnoSe" on your flashcart and take it with you to check all the functions.

If you're not using flashcarts, be sure to bring at least one DS game and one GBA game to test with, preferably games that use all the buttons and/or functions of the DS.

Make sure the shoulder buttons work.
Make sure the touchscreen works.
Test the microphone.
Check the hinge for cracks.
Test the Dpad & ABXY buttons for mushiness. (a sign that the contact pads underneath are wearing out. the A button usually goes bad first, so be sure to test it)
Make sure the speakers sound ok. (listen for static and/or crackles)
Check for scratches on either of the screens or the casing. (signs of possible trauma to the DS)
Check for equal brightness on both screens. (my bro got burned by this, his top screen is slightly dimmer, it's the one thing we forgot to pay attention to)
Check for misaligned screens. (sucks when the screens are crooked)
Make sure BOTH card slots on the DSlite are working.

I don't think I left out anything too important. Follow those guidelines and you should end up with a decent replacement.

It sounds to me like someone may have (accidentally....or not) broke your old DS and that's why you can't find it.
