don't you just love when family and friends know you as the hacker?

So Recently I had a friend of mine come over because he heard that homebrew was possible on his 3DS and he needed my help. which I did but that also caught the attention of my brother who also wanted the downgrade and Emunand. so I did that as well. and now they come to me whenever it comes to installing CIA files, loading a homebrew app, stuff like that

It is a well documented thing. Anybody has some expertise in something and everybody that might have learned at least a tiny bit then says "poke it, they know, ask them". I have seen it many times for anything that remotely qualifies as expertise.
Granted the following is also very true https://xkcd.com/763/

Why do they call you a "hacker" when you only follow the tutorials? They should call you free tech support guy

I have a friend who does that to me, but now he has updated his 3ds to 11.0, he is planning to buy an N3ds so yeah

iktf.
Sounds pretty cool at first, "Yo, Supster, you know how to hack huh? Think you can hack my [insert device here]".
Been going since Elementary school, so it can get annoying at times. Especially since sometimes they don't want to pay you '_>'
I tell them, "It's not really hard, a quick Google search and you can do it on your own"
"But I'm scared that I'm going to break it"

Whatever, as long as I get money, I'm willing to do stuff like that.

Also yeah to @Viri. Being the tech support guy sucks, parents aren't going to give you money lmao.

Well, some people know that I hacked my 3DS or the Wii, of something; & they usually just say "Are you doing illeeeeegal stuff?" :P
Most of the time I'm just using it for some romhacks or ram editing, but either way, I'm not really anything of a hacker. Like a lot of us here, we just ended up following instructions somewhere. Maybe you can learn a bit of how the process is as you go, but it takes a lot more to be considered an expert in this sort of thing.

Only help your closest of friends for free. Everyone else gets to pay you for your troubles.

Once you become a modder becoming friends with people after that is impossible. I learned that the hard way :( . Everyone I met after my original friends only use me for mods. My normal friends don't care whether I use them or not as long as I play with them. Its sad...
Even if I pretend I am not a modder it slips out eventually and after that it is like our friendship is ruined.

I got one of those free Square card readers for my phone, so I can get paid to mod stuff for my friends. Like, I'll fully soft-mod a Wii with emulators, shitloads of roms, a dark red and black theme, and a USB Loader for $20 if they provide the Wii, or $50 if I provide the Wii.

No I really don't. They problem is the name has a bad stigma attached to it and as someone in IT you don't want to be know as a "hacker" unless it's an ethical hacker.

The only people who get free tech support service out of me is my mother and father as I live with them.( they still pay for parts) Everyone else gets charged for parts and labor at my regular price.

If someone comes up and tells me they are an "ethical hacker" I know they have just picked the gender studies equivalent for the IT world.

aye I use to just shut the router on and off and to my family I was god when the wifi wouldnt work.

Amount of times I had "family members" ask me about computer related problems and in the end completely disregarded me advice or called me names over it..
No, family, I fucking hate them and refuse to do anything for them.
Friends however always come to me and thank me for it.
