cool romhack i saw in a dream

so! animal crossing. i put around 3k hours into new leaf and i put around 200 hours into new horizons before realizing that i hated it and that it was the weakest entry in the franchise.

modding ACNL has been a thing for a while-- i specifically remember seeing people posting their custom villagers to tumblr a good while back-- but i dreamt there was a massive romhack out there that tried to add a lot of the QOL changes that were implemented in new horizons...and im wondering if it would be possible to implement in real life.

what i remember:
  • you could pick what face you wanted and what skintone your character would have before talking with rover at the start of the game.
    • this could later be changed in shampoodle, in a tanning bed.
  • there was more inventory space
  • the villager dialogue was tweaked to make them meaner / make their behaviour similar to the older games
  • there was more villagers-- most of them were either ports from new horizons and removed villagers from the e+ era. this is probably the easiest thing to replicate irl
  • you could place furniture outdoors. this is probably the *hardest* thing to replicate irl. i remember this was done by making the outside and the inside of buildings the same? but there was an issue where sometimes bugs would spawn inside buildings and the game would crash.
  • more slots for designs
  • you were able to call villagers to the RV park without amiibos (this was what i was excited about the most tbh lol
i wonder how much of it could be achieved in real life? it ran on both original hardware and citra without issues, but i have no idea if a 3DS would be able to manage all of this...it'd certainly be easier to mod new horizons into being more like new leaf than the other way around

ive been trying to find documentation about new leaf and how one could go about making romhacks for it, but i havent had any luck...i did find this romhack though, which looks very interesting. so i assume there has to be documentation somewhere and i just havent found it yet because im dumb lol

That's a very specific and detailed dream, I'm impressed you were able to remember this much.
ACNL is still my favourite game of all-time, unlike ACNH which I also disliked (honestly even from the moment that it was announced).

Most of these things are unfortunately probably completely infeasible, since it would require very advanced modifications of the game's code, and without access to the original source code and development tools, that's an especially extremely hard task.

Custom villagers are possible and there are already many custom villager mods, but I think it is only possible to do so by replacing (removing) another villager.

Some basic dialogue modifications are definitely possible, since the file formats that the dialogues are stored in are somewhat understood, there are some programs to modify dialogue files, I think there have even been some translation project attempts.

Software amiibo emulation is a thing on the 3DS with CFW these days, so that'd be easy to solve. But modifying the game to completely eliminate the amiibo functionality and replace it with some feature that doesn't require external intervention (no need to use an amiibo emulator) is probably once again not possible, since it would require advanced code modification.

@IC_ yeah, i dont think its possible:( especially since the game hasnt been decompiled...its not like mario 64 where we have the source code and people know every little detail of the game. and i dont really have the know-how for decompiling anything lol.

hopefully we get another massive nintendo leak soon...? ;)

but yeah i think itd be way easier to just mod new horizons to make it more like new leaf...or just make a clone of ACNL thats pc-only.

(edit: sorry for ping..wanted to quote your post but i forgot lol)

There's no problem with the ping, I'd be glad to be notified, but I didn't get a notification about the response either way. I only know about your response thanks to the notification about my comment getting liked. The blog feature of GBAtemp has been unfortunately broken like this for quite a while now.
