God, Minecraft is confusing...

Just tried the singleplayer full version of Minecraft, managed to survive my first day, thanks to a video on the Minecraft site; got rid of all the blocks and made a small "cave", got some torches made from sticks and coal, etc. survived my night by using my sword on the stupid monsters that wouldn't stop trying to get in, I succeeded, then I decided to build a house outside (in the daylight ofc) and I had no idea the monsters could roam outside in the light, and got my ass handed to me, raged and clicked quit, lol, any tips on what to do after the first night, I need things to do so I can survive and build other things, so what do I do next?

I actually just built myself a house and got a furnace so I could get a door, now, I wonder if there are any windows

Put sand in a furnace to get glass.

Also, why did you need a furnace to get a door? You know you can make doors out of wood, right?

Thanks, now I can make windows =D
I used it for one of those button doors, I got iron earlier and used it to make that.

You should probably leave it on peaceful until you get used to the game though if you're having this much trouble.
Just didn't realize it had gotten dark because I was mining and found some iron, then I went out and I was like, "Oh shit!" Anyway, thanks for the suggestion, it fixed my problem.
You could have just blocked up the entrance with some cobblestone and waited it out mining in peace, unblocking 1 block to check every now and then.
Minecraft has a steep learning curve but once you've got it setting yourself up again is really easy.

Tip for you: Mods. Many of the mods existing right now is extremely useful in game, one of these is Mo`s creatures mods which adds horses that you can tame and ride, then there is other which change the entire game in itself, one is the nazi-zombie mod which is in progress. Other just gives you new tools, like netherrack and dragon tools.

Also, you dont have to build near spawn, you can also build your house close to a landmark. I built mine around a floating island a minute away from spawn. Or you can make a massive dirt tower near your house.
I recommend optimine it makes minecraft run much better especially if you are going to play with dynamite.
Well, Beta 1.3 comes WITH Optimine, so that's really useful.

If you need any help, there's a bunch of Wikis out there.

Also, DON'T USE GOLD TOOLS. They may be fast, but they are not durable. Just stick with Iron until you find Diamond. :)

Really? Must be new in Beta 1.3. I've noticed a few things, such as spiders can apparently randomly day at dawn now (One died in an SSP world and dropped 2 string...), and neutral mobs (Chickens, pigs, etc.) seem to be more solid. A chicken pushed me off a cliff earlier and I died. ;_;
No, spiders have been neutral during the day for a while now.

Decided to use my half made house as a safe spot, I made a second floor, below the 1st and then the next night I go back there and a creeper was in there, I died lol but I was able to pick all my stuff back up and I found more iron.

I had a fucking creeper blow up out of nowhere in peaceful. Scared the shit outta me.

Well that make sense... :P

So just as a word of warning....Slimes are back.....And I got absolutely owned by one of the huge ones :glare:

...if you hear fapping run away...its a slime...and its an asshole....

I wanna head down to The Nether, although I have no idea how to get there and back =(

the entry way to the nether is a portal that you have to build

the only way to build it is to acquire obsidian (10 pieces), they are very hard to mine however requiring a diamond pickax and they are only located down near the bottom of the minecraft map way under ground near where lava and water is

you can read all about it on the wiki so I wont go too in depth http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/The_Nether
you can enter and get back very easily by entering the portal inside the nether and it will return you back to the original portal in the normal world

if you wanna cut out a lot of time you can use a program to INVedit to generate obsidian block (and just about every other block and item in the game) to your inventory

Thanks for the info, not going to use the program as I will end up cheating the whole way and make it boring. Where can I find Diamond ore, been looking for ages, I even fell in the lava whilst looking for it, the best thing I can find is iron, so I started making some armour with that but still need diamond (The Nether, tools etc.), how hard is it to find?

diamond is also located near the bottom of the map, its rare so its pretty hard to find and you usually only find 1-2 pieces at a time

strip mine on layers 12, 13 and 14.

I think if you hold F4 to see the stats it will give you information on what layer you're on.

F3, it will show FPS, coordinates and mobnumbers (even if you can't see the mobs themselves), as well as other stuff.
Y Coordinate is the height you are at.

Thanks, I haven't played in a while so I forgot most of the buttons.

I hope OP didn't waste all of his iron because he's going to need a bucket.

Right now I feel like raging big time, get this, I was mining deep deep down and had heaps of gold, diamond, redstone, iron, coal , and just learnt how to get obsidian and I fell in the fucking lava when I lagged and died ffs I'm so pissed lol.
