An argument for insensitivity

Here I am. A human being on the planet Earth in the year 2,018 as far as recorded history is concerned. I live in the self-proclaimed greatest nation on the planet during what people have stated is the greatest time to exist. I am about to share what seems to be an unpopular opinion while I still have the freedom to do so.

As I have been on this rock in space for over 3 decades, I have witnessed a significant amount of social change, although the significance of some of these changes is negligible. I won't point out any specific group, because it isn't my intention to start a huge flame war. Normally I am a very insensitive person, however the point of this topic is to highlight the merits and importance of insensitivity and how it is a necessary evil if mankind is to continue to flourish.

Civil, economic, and social unrest are all the results of one group being overly insensitive towards another. That unrest leads to outrage, which then eventually leads to cultural change. The majority of cultural change is good, and humanity as a whole benefits. However, not all cultural change is good.

I have never subscribed to the notion of being "politically correct" because first and foremost it hampers my right to freedom of expression, but also because it is an unnecessary byproduct of oversensitivity. Sheltering people from negativity creates weakness.

Overcoming the adversity of uncomfortable situations is what helps humanity advance. If any notable humans of influence who have come before us hid in a "safe space" during times of great distress, chances are I wouldn't be writing this, you wouldn't be reading it, and recorded history would not exist because that one person did not have the courage to follow a dream that others mocked.

TL;DR
Fuck sensitivity. Get over it. Greatness isn't achieved easily.

@Coto hell, I am, I've been in a handful of abusive relationships in the past. It's definitely nothing to be ashamed of. I definitely don't want anyone to treat me with kid gloves, and obviously I don't think anyone wants that because it's patronizing. But both my friends and love interests know there are things that they can't do, say, or expect of around me, and that's ok, for the most part people are respectful if I ask them nicely to stop doing something. The few true dicks that I've met, though, are the ones who make rape jokes (for instance) and then proceed to laugh and say stuff about how overly sensitive and unmasculine I must be when I ask them to stop

"Have we progressed? the overall climate appears to just be more and more hostile"
By most measures then yes. It is one of the safest, healthiest, easiest and so forth times in history. People are generally free to be what they want to be.

There are still things to sort but for the most part it is done, mostly minor stuff and proper codification that can be done almost at the leisure of the systems in place rather than trying to patch a framework built from reactionary moves. What reactionary moves there are today almost risk making things worse at times.

@TotalInsanity4 have we progressed? In the past millennia? Dude, we have the internet, been to the moon, probes on mars, healthcare unheard as early as the 1800s. The technology for all these things were created in response to war. Some of those wars were based on race, religion, all the things PC's want us to be sensitive about.

@Coto so if we went back to turn of the century worker exploitation with no trade unions, and 16 hour work days - that would be fine with you?

I don't believe you for one second

@Memoir PC culture isn't responsible for Trump getting elected, it's the people who were offended by what they perceived PC culture to be who went to the voting booths and voted him in

Plus... Other factors, but this isn't the thread for that

The post I responded to specifically said war, civil unrest, racism, etc in the past millennia

We were making progress towards freedom of expression up until the mid to late 90s. Back when bands like Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson were just as mainstream as whatever bubblegum pop shit we had back then. Over the last 20 years though, I've noticed a trend of oversensitivity in all media. The only popular music now is just kiddie electronic shit. Video games have become less violent and many try too hard to cater to special interests and not to offend anybody. Most networks on US television censor even the word "ass" now, and it's either difficult or impossible now to find uncensored versions of shows on DVD or Blu-Ray anymore. They think it's hurting their bottom line by being "offensive" but the popularity of shows like South Park, networks like Showtime and HBO, and the edgier Netflix originals prove that there is a high demand for that kind of material.

Wow I thank everyone who has continued the discussion.
I notice it got moved from general off-topic and is a blog post now. I guess that's cool, I didn't even know I could create a blog.

So I had a few thoughts when reading through the replies.
While I can be an asshole, it is not my default mode. I give the respect/courtesy or lack thereof that is given to me as appropriate. People get what they give.

I'm not afraid to tell people the truth, even if it could hurt them.

I agree with the underlying premise of political correctness, but many people that I have associated with use it as a means to declare artificial superiority over one another as being the most accepting of people that differ from them. Personally, I don't care who you are, as long as you aren't rude, arrogant, a bully, or a brat, you aren't doing anything illegal, and you view me as an equal. When people act like jerks, then I get annoyed because they are hypocritical; they want respect, yet will not give anyone else any respect in return.

It should really be called "social correctness" because it is social in nature, not political.
