While I think that it is absolutely amazing the things that we can simulate within virtual landscapes and worlds in these days and having the ability to do wonderful things with and within them. I feel as if maybe some of it is wasted effort at times, adding more than is needed while draining resources from creating a truly substantial world.
I don't mean that modern games aren't good in any way, more that some games feel more like beautiful art pieces or graphics showcases than games, and how things that were once used in creative fashion to set moods or create illusions are now extra assets that put extra strain on systems, like how fog used to be used to not only set up a creepy. scary, or mysterious atmosphere while making it so things could be culled out or loaded in without the player ever noticing.
Then we add in things like bloom or lens flare, things that once looked amazing at a time and were used creatively, are now slowly become hinderances to gameplay, often blinding or obscuring the vision of the player during normal gameplay, having people wait until the night cycle of the game begins just so they can play more easily and accurately. Thankfully, at least, some devs are starting to allow you to switch off these features so that is a bit of a blessing.
Though this could all just be a case of people learning and figuring things out in a whole new world of what is possible in the virtual worlds they can create today and are slowly perfecting the art with the new tools they are given. This also could just be their vision of what they wanted to begin with as well, trying to create worlds that are so realistic that they easily captivate their audiences and keep them enthralled til the very end.
As with any art, this is just one of many subjective views and I am quite sure there are many people that love the amount of realism that is being poured into these games. I also hope that people aren't assuming I think the devs and others that work on these games are lazy, because I know how difficult and time consuming creating and programming these worlds can be.
Thank you to everyone that reads this and I hope you all have a wonderful day.
