Accused of Downloading Something I Didn't!

I received a letter from Comcast today saying that I downloaded Rock Band Unplugged on 7/15/2010,
but I know for a fact that I didn't download that then, or EVER! I plan on contacting them tomorrow and
reporting this false accusation, and mentioning to them that I don't have a security password for my
Wifi Router. I'm a bit of a n00b at doing security stuff, so could somebody instruct me on how to set up
a password for it? Would help if you could. I'm fed up with this, since it said I downloaded it through
BitTorrent, when I don't even have BitTorrent installed!

When you call they're going to say it' your fault, probably.

In your start/globe menu, go to the "run" command. If you're on vista/7, you'd use the little white box near the bottom. Type in "CMD" and press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER.

In the black box that comes up, type "ipconfig" and press enter. It'll list a series of four numbers as your "default gateway". Write those down. Go open any web browser, and enter the four numbers (like 192.168.x.x) into the address bar, and press enter.

A login box should come up. The username should be "admin" or blank, and the password can be anything from "admin" to "administrator" "pass" to "password" or "password1", or something else if you've set it differently. Ask whoever set up the router what the password to get into it is, or check this page.

Then you'll be able to see what sort of wireless security settings you have set up. First make sure that SSID broadcasting is ON, then remember what the SSID is, it's the name of your network. Change it if you want. Turn MAC address filtering off. You will need to change the wireless security type to WPA. It'll have you make a pass key or phrase. WRITE. IT. DOWN. After you save the changes, you will need to enter that key on any machine (computer or game system) that you want to connect to the internet.

Then in the game/system/whatever, go to the wireless settings. Have it scan, pick out your network from the list, enter the key/phrase when requested.

Unfortunately the DS only works with WEP, but that can be broken easily, so don't risk it if you have a known leecher.

BitTorrent is probably how Comcast is referring to any p2p file sharing. Even if you didn't download it (given that you visit here, I'm betting you did), you're responsible for it because you're name's on the bill. If you own the game (which again, I doubt given the fact that you visit here), then you have a legal argument - otherwise, pay the fine and suck it up. You knew what you were getting into.

That's not true at all.

I hacked my PSP, but I dont use torrents, and I havent downloaded anything for months. They didnt list a fine, so I think Im in the clear, but Im setting up a password immediately, Because Im almost certain it was my neighbor's kid.

If you want to get back at him, see if you can access his network (before setting up a password) and put random stuff on any drives. Or just go talk to him.

I like the idea of saturating their lawn with mashed potato flakes...

go to IE and type in 192.168.1.1 or try 192.168.2.1 .....................at which point you will see a login in screen , for the user name and pass try , admin:admin or admin:Pass or admin:Pass1 ......you did d/l the file , you know it as well as I do ......when it comes to torrent , there are a ton of clients and you got caught ......but never fear , some clients do support ssl.... now read and learn http://www.ehow.com/how_5140933_securely-u...-webui-ssl.html

Make a virus and send it to your router port. Turn off all of your internet whatever off and just let the router run. Then when the kid uses your router, VIRUS ATTACK.... IDK if this is possible though .
OR Make a keylogger put it in a usb. Then go to his/her house then put the usb in their computer without them noticing or you can get him to download it without him know and he thinks its just a psp iso, and then wait for a week. After that steal all of his information on any site then change everything  for example, if he has a myspace change password and change the status and call all of his friends fags. :tpi:  BUT..... if they find out its you, they could sue you so... I suggest just going to go threaten him, unless your over 18 then just talk to his parents.

As far as I know there isn't a router that forces you to download files xD

So the choice is...impossible or...breaking and entering.

Dude, say whatever the hell makes you sleep at night, but I did not download the file. I dont even have a torrent downloading program installed on my laptop, as I dont want to muck it up with viruses, even though I do know about torrent downloading applications. I set a password for my router so that way he cant leech off of our internet anymore.

Was it a cease and desist? Or just a letter telling you of what happened?

And, glad to see you made a password for it. I was going to suggest that.

I've only just joined the WiFi brigade so don't really know much about it (yet) but doesn't the router have a firewall log or something you could look at ??? (mine does show what IP/MAC have connected to it)

If so perhaps you could see if there's any IP addresses that you are unfamiliar with - then on some pretense or something, pop next door & get onto his computer to check out his IP address

If they match ---- You've Got Him !!

Microsoft wouldn't C&D a customer for downloading one measly PSP game. If anything it's just a scare tactic to make people stop downloading stuff. In the end you're still paying your bills to them and they want to keep that.

I'd forget it. If they actually legitimately threaten you legally or with denial of service because of later downloads that weren't you, then bring it up. Otherwise it's just a useless laying saying "Hey, um, you downloaded this (even though you didn't), and, um, that's bad, m'kay. Downloading is bad, m'kay."
