About Multimeters and TV's - Shit that Happens #17

Couple years ago, I found a Toshiba 15DL15 TV in the flea market near my home. Bitch costed me $400.00MXN, which could've been used for a two days worth of food... anyway...
Bitch has VGA port, Component Ports, Composite Ports, Aux Audio IN/OUT port, bitch was a true beauty. It has a max/native resolution of 480x640... and guess which console also has that resolution? The Wii of course!
So, Wii + Component+ Bitch = Beautiful "retro" games.
Unfortunately, that joy lasted for about 3 months or so, because Bitch stopped turning on. Actually, it stopped receiving energy altogether. I tried changing power cables and even soldering the cable to the power input, but nothing worked.
Bitch is been dead since January 2021.

In the meantime, I've been trying to find a multimeter to test continuity and possibly find which part of the TV has gone bad.
It's been a two year struggle because SCHOLAR GRADE MULTIMETERS ARE ABOVE $700.00MXN... WTF?
And the ones I could find with continuity test only had like 4 functions at most, which of course, where a lot cheaper that "SchOlAr gRaDe fOr bEGinNers" ...

About two days ago, I finally saved enough to get a decent one, with continuity and other functions. The brand is PLUSIVO and it was relatively cheap. It's currently at $360.00MXN (in Amazon because I'm still locked out from my Mercado Libre account ) and I was considering getting that one because it said "for professional work"... not because I consider myself a pro... actually I'm far from that, way too far. But I'm assuming it should endure more than a "Scholar Grade" one.
But I couldn't find info on that brand, and that to me, says that it's probably Chinese, so, if I somehow ended up needing a piece for that, they'd probably be non existent or scarse.
So decided to play it fair and went with one from TRUPER which is a brand I have tools from and they've lasted and resisted hard treatment.

So, TRUPER is offering two models in Amazon, which are about the same price than the PLUSIVO one.
One was Scholar Grade, sitting at $200.00MXN or so. Varies between with/without free shipping... and another one, not Professional nor Scholar grade, was at $327.00MXN with "free" delivery... so I went with that one... it actually had more functions than the other one.

Today, I told my papa that I finally could buy me a much wanted multimeter, and he casually said:

"Oh! I have one!
Forgot until now that you mentioned it. I was going to tell you two weeks ago but forgot.
Here."

Sigh... the device he's referring to is this one:

Analog...
I wouldn't trust readings done with an Analog one.

But anyway, my rant here is the following...

Since the beginning of this year, I've been exclusively hunting for CRT monitors. I haven't found ANY AT ALL... UNTIL YESTERDAY WHEN I PAID AND SPENT ALL I HAD LEFT IN A DIGITAL MULTIMETER!
:nayps3:

Literally, yesterday went to a store to pay for my Amazon product, my multimeter that is, and decided to go to the flea market to see if I could find a TRUPER one.
Didn't found a multimeter, but did found CRT MONITORS NEARLY EVERYWHERE

God damnit! Been hunting for them ENTIRE YEARS.

I don't have high hopes in CRT monitors nowadays, specially with my luck... speaking about finding one in "perfect" conditions... so even if I can get my hands in one, it'll probably have picture defects... or at the very least, will probably need a complete recap.
I just can't believe my luck, that when I have the money, no matter how much I hold it, I'll never find a CRT monitor. And as soon as I don't have money, bam, they appear in the wild.

This isn't the first time this exact same scenario has happened. Dinoh once replied to me: "lol same" one time I ranted about this same thing happening probably last year.

But anyway, now I have two multimeters....I hope I'll be able to diagnose my Bitch TV and fix it.
That'll make me a little bit happy.

*sigh*

Now ain’t that a bitch.

Good luck with your monitor. Probably needs a replacement power supply (AKA feed me moar money!)

Check capacitors on the power supply / transformer of the non-working Toshiba "Bitch" (Thinking about this… would make a good actual model name. Toshiba Bitch 15DL15)
Sadly many cheaper multimeters don't have capacity measurement function.

As for analoge multimeters: They are by no means worse than the digital counterparts. Even high-end versions exist. If you don't trust the readings from it: This is fine. You shouldn't just simply trust it. You should verify it is working correctly by measuring things with known values: brand new alkaline battery, power outlet (CAREFUL!), some resistors (calculate expected value from color code)…
Check it goes to zero Ω when shorting the probes in resistance mode. Analoge multimeters might need adjustment depending on the selected range of resistance.

Good luck!

Okay, just for the record, another example of my typical luck.
So, I've been trying this Analogue Multimeter and it's not working. Except for Continuity Test function, everything else is not working at all.
The needle is stuck in place and I can't recalibrate it. It won't even read fully charged (brand new) Duracell Batteries.

So overall, this Multimeter is nearly useless, unless I'm being extra stupid and I'm failing at recalibrating this thing.

Instruction manual says to replace fuse if it's not reading anything, replaced fuse, still refuses to read anything but continuity.

Are we talking about crt or lcd? Unless it's a crt (pc) monitor don't think consumer crts ever came with vga, also not sure about component for a crt monitor.. 🤔
Anyway, do you get any signal, like no power? Power led off, no sound at all etc.?
I'd start with the psu, sadly it could be just all dead, and you'd just waste your time with the multimeter trying to find the cause of failure, cause it might needs replacing all of it (bit difficult this day and age)..

Damn! Missed your post, didn't got notified.

I have a faulty LCD Toshiba TV.
Been wanting a CRT Computer Monitor, those comes with VGA and I'm curious to see if my diy VGA/Component adapter works with my Wii.
That's the only reason I would want a CRT Monitor nowadays.

Yep! Not even the "StandBy" light comes on when plugged. It's totally dead. I'm assuming it got wet as I found my desk wet from heavy rain the day before it stopped working. So water damage is probably what caused the problem. I took it apart about a year ago, but didn't found any traces of water damage such as corrosion, stains... not even the capacitors where in bad shape, which is why I was trying to get a multimeter to check everything more properly.

With my luck... yeah, it might just be gone for good. The TV model is from 2005... but I still have hopes. Might be a fuse? Bad capacitors? Bad bridge rectifier?
Been watching lots of videos about diagnosing TV problems. I still haven't tried anything, gotta inform myself first.

Thus far, I've found a Service Manual for that particular model.

Hope the Oscilloscope is not necessary... those are $12,000mxn

Yo! I might be getting too excited... but this fuse seems kinda suspicious.

I've already checked continuity in all the board, I've checked values in Caps and they're all charging and discharging correctly.
I've made sure that Power Supply is indeed getting continuty, I just found this fuse as it was covered in black rubber...

OH SHIT... Forget it...
