3ds lovers vs. haters

Hi all, I'm a new poster, and I'm honestly disturbed by the number of people who responded negatively to a fellow-poster's honest inquiry as to whether or not 3ds games could be played on a DS.

I'm relatively new to the Nintendo gaming experience...I've been wanting to play Animal Crossing for ages, and as it seems I can only play it on the DS or the Wii, I've had to consider adding a Nintendo gaming platform to my already eye-strained laptop gaming experience.

I waited, like many of you, with baited breath for the first reviews to come out on the newly-released Nintendo 3ds. I figured if I'm getting a Nintendo, I should get the newest version, right? And besides, the 3d aspect was just cool.

After doing my research and reading the reviews, however, I've decided that the 3ds may not be for me. The small screen size, potential for dizziness and/or headaches, and the limited capacity for playing regular 2d DS games was enough to sway my decision in favor of the dsi xl. However, I too, wondered whether or not one could play 3ds games in 2d on a DS, because I was quite drawn to the French Bulldog in the new 3ds Nintendogs + Cats, and, not finding that breed available in other Nintendog editions on a web search, wondered if that was my only option to get that particular breed.

So I stumbled my way to this forum, to find a similar question asked, namely, can you play 3ds games on a DS, and although I wasn't surprised to find that the answer was no, I was quite surprised to find the vehement responses urging the questioner to just "get over it" and to suck it up and fork over the money to buy the newest, latest and greatest Nintendo. S/he asked a valid question regarding compatibility, and I for one, am not satisfied with the answer. Why can't the 3ds play DS games? Is it merely an issue of logistics, or is there a greater stake involved, namely profiteering at the customer's expense? I'm not satisfied with the company response (in a nutshell, "no,") and I'm definitely not happy with the community response, which was basically, to just suck it up, you lame-o.

I may be new to the whole Nintendo thing, but I'm not new to the concept of bullying. I'm certainly not new to the idea of community, and how a community reflects, for better or worse, the ideal or notion or in this case, product, which a community is focused upon. I'd like to be a member of the Nintendo community, but judging from the nasty, self-aggrandizing, capitalistic comments one poster received, I'm not sure this is a community I'd like to be a part of, and hence, not a company I'd like to patron with my hard-earned middle-class dollars.

So I guess I'd like to ask, is this a community of decent folks who help one another out by offering constructive, useful suggestions and answers to legitimate questions without judgment, or...have you all been playing Street Fighter too long?

Thanks,
KitchenWitch

Why would you be able to play 3ds games on an nds? It's like trying to play a ps3 game on the ps2. The 3ds games require better hardware.... I really don't understand your points at all. It's like complaining the xbox can't play 360 games. Going by your logic we would all still be playing pong as bringing out new hardware is a rip off?

The 3ds isn't just nds games with 3d. The graphics have been greatly improved which the Nds can't handle.

Also all gaming community are like that as you tend to come up against young teenagers who think it's fun to troll or be rude.

Online communities are like that. But it´s just internet, you shouldn´t take it too srsly.

However kinda sad for your friend, don´t let stuff like this take him/her down. =p

Headaches and eye-strain only happen to a minority of people. Some who greatly condemn the 3DS (like IT SUCKSS or whatever) can also be fake comments. 3DS games are more than just NDS + 3D, they have far better quality graphics and gaming capacity which hat the NDS or even DSi cannot handle, as said by thegame07. From wiki, the 3DS is also said to support 24-bit color instead of 16-bit on the DS/DSL/DSi/LL/XL. :)

Correct me if i have said anything wrong.

EDIT: Headache or eye-strain? Use the depth slider! Also, welcome to gbatemp :ha:

Welcome to gba temp. It really is a great forum. Understand alot of the members are just kids who haven't learned how to treat people and show civility. Don't let the responses of a few Dinka turn you away from a great community.

Hi, thanks for your response! :) The other poster I mentioned wasn't a "friend," per se, just some post I came across when I was searching as to whether or not the 3ds could play DS games. I guess I just felt sorry for the number of negative responses they received in asking a legitimate question, and as I'm looking to purchase a Nintendo myself, I wasn't thrilled with how the community reacted to their question. But you're right...it is the internet, and folks are free to say whatever they want. I just find that certain gaming sites have a definite "vibe" as to the community surrounding them, and to see the flagrant negativity surrounding that one poster's question seriously turned me off. I'm just hoping it's not a reflection of the Nintendo gaming community as a whole, that's all. :) Thanks again!

If someone is being rude to anyone like that on here. The mods tend to remove it and warn them. It's best just to ignore people like that anyway they are most likely kids.

The reason why the person got negative responses was because #1. You find everything on Google, #2. It's considered as general knowledge to know that, and #3. Because people here are very frank and blunt about answers most of the time. (a part of the community-which I'm not part of-has turned cynical because a LOT of people ask useless questions here.. like "WEREZ ME POKEYMANS FIX" or "IS DER TRANZLFATIONZ FOR KINGDOM HARTZ????")

It's not meant to be taken personally.

Also, welcome to Temp, hope you stay here for a while. I like your name, I assume you're a good cook? :P

If you are speaking of playing a genuine 3DS game cart in a normal NDS handheld I think It would be physically impossible wouldn't It be..

There is that extra lip on the new carts and I think that It wouldn't even be able to be inserted into the older models right?

As far as the temper's go, I have found most people very helpful and knowledgeable and usually I find that to be the older more mature crew.

Then you have the bad apples, the one's that just want to start a fight. Mostly fanboys and young children that don't respect opinions of others that conflict with their own beliefs.

As long as you don't lower yourself to their level It's not really an issue.

I wouldn't say it's "hate", it's a matter of a) people assuming you've played videogames before and b) exasperation over the same questions being asked several times. I wouldn't take it personally. It's really no different then going to say, a large group of mechanics if you know nothing about cars.

That said, the community is very helpful. When I started here, I had been playing games since the 80's but knew nothing about console hacking. Now I can play Atari 2600 games on the Wii, as one of numerous examples. Been helped out a bunch of times, even with really stupid questions.

EDIT: @Zero - Actually, you can file off the tab and insert it into a DS, so it's not physically impossible. Joystiq did it just to see what would happen (nothing, as expected)

I had no knowledge of hacking too... I was actually referred by an admin from ShopTemp for queries when i purchased my first item from them :)

And i have to say! The community here is really helpful, although some are a little rough on their language, but i don't really mind. :)

It's a simple fact of hardware specifications.
The 3DS is a different and much more powerful machine than a DS or DSi.
In the same way that you can't expect a PS2 game to run on a PSX, or a PS3 game to run on a PS2, games developed for the 3DS can not be expected to run on the DSi or DS.

At least Nintendo have included backwards compatibility so that DS and DSi games can be played on the 3DS. That's more than you get with some console generation gaps.

Strange normally they wouldn't do that as they want you to buy games and not find out how to play them for free lol. That's a great store I use them too.

Sorry, just noticed that the bit I originally quoted asked "why can't the 3DS play DS games?", which it can.
But in another section of your post you said "So I stumbled my way to this forum, to find a similar question asked, namely, can you play 3ds games on a DS"
Seems you either made a typo in one place or the other, or you're a bit confused about what you're asking.

To clarify:
The new device, called the 3DS, can play the games that are made for it, and the games that were made for the previous devices called the DS and the DSi.
Those old devices (DS and DSi) however, can not play the games made for the new device (3DS), which is no shock to most people with any experience in the workings of consumer electronic devices, or anyone who stops and thinks about it for a moment or two.

Haha well i already paid for* that item from them and had pretty lots of queries about it, then they introduced me to this wonderful forum. :ha:

I really enjoy it here, you can always get the answers to what you want (make sure it's not a dumb question!)

Considering the type of merchandise the stores on ShopTemp deal in, not surprising at all.

I'd say beyond debating if it is a "dumb question" or not, the more important thing is simply searching to see if the question has already been asked, or can easily be answered using something like google. That's what annoys people more then anything else here.

Even if you think it's a "dumb question" we have AskGBATemp and "noob" threads for that, where people tend to be hmmz... more forgiving, I guess you could say.

Hey there, yah, I can understand exasperation but hey, I used google and I got HERE, so that shows just how much knowledge is out there. Maybe if I'd phrased my search string differently, I'd have gotten to the "official" answer, but no, here I sit. :P But yah, seemed like the responses to that poster were more than rude...they were mean-like, which I thought was totally unfair.

As for KitchenWitch, yah, that's my handle. As for being a good cook, well, that's open to interpretation, I guess...d'pends on what's cookin! :P

LOL. I only found out the AskGBATemp section a few days ago :P

I guess some people ask the same question here simply because they don't really trust online sources (google) and just want to reconfirm it here. Nah, that's just me. Cuz i used to be like that :ha:

Wow, i sure like the :ha: icon.

Yes, we are a community of decent folks... you have to understand that doesn't mean not to make jokes... That means when you need to know something you'll have your answer, maybe a funny answer, maybe a serious answer... This is a great community, we all are pals... :yaynds: :yay:
