A fond farewell to GBAtemp!

A fond farewell to GBAtemp!
Retirement & goodbyes
I have been a member of this fantastic community for close to nine years and probably a staff member for eight of those. But the time has come to announce my retirement as a staff member.

I’ve been with GBAtemp right from the beginning and seen it grow into the huge community it is today. Like a lot of you I remember the very early days of GBA flashcards – Flash Advance cards, PogoShell and Serial port flashers – then came the DS stuff like passme’s and eventually Slot-1 flashcards. The future holds a lot of promise with the excellent 3DS and whatever new console the big N is cooking up. The scene has come a long way, and GBAtemp has as well.

The site has grown in the nine years I’ve been a member, and so have I. I’ve met a lot of fantastic people here and am immensely thankful to the members and other staff who have made this site into what it is today. But I’ve found that other things in life are taking up more and more attention and I don’t think I’d be able to continue to give GBAtemp the attention it deserves.

I hope you have enjoyed my reviews, news and opinions over the years just as much as I’ve enjoyed serving the community. You’ll probably still see me around on GBAtemp from time to time - I won’t disappear off the face of the planet - but it will probably be less frequent.

And finally, in the immortal words of the silliest retirement speech from an Australian Prime Minister I’ve ever heard, ‘I’ve gotta zip!’

Worker smuggles 3DS out of factory

Worker smuggles 3DS out of factory
Leaked shot of finished 3DS

A Chinese factory worker has risked his job by smuggling a Nintendo 3DS straight off a factory production line.

The culprit has snapped a picture of the device which looks the same as the final design for the handheld which was revealed last year. So far the smuggler has not revealed any more information or released any more pictures of the device, but we hope more information will be made available eventually.

With the Nintendo 3DS gearing up for a release in Japan next month it is no wonder the devices are being mass produced. But Nintendo will also need the devices for two press events to be held simultaneously in America and Europe on January 19. The events are expected to fill in the rest of the world as to when they can get their hands on the 3DS and for how much.

The Nintendo 3DS is releasing in Japan on February 26 for the same price as the Wii launched at (25,000 Yen). Thanks to mangaTom for the news tip-off on the forums!

3DS games could be up to 8GB

3DS games could be up to 8GB
Nintendo contracts cartridge maker

Nintendo 3DS game cartridges could hold up to 8 GigaBytes in space according to a Taiwanese website.

Gamrade is reporting that Nintendo has contracted Taiwanese company Macronix to produce the 3DS's cartridges, which the company says can hold up to 8GB in space should Nintendo require a cartridge that big.

Nintendo has previously set a tentative limit of 2GB for 3DS games, but the report seems to suggest that this limit could change in the future and that games could go up in size.

The largest size DS cartridge is 512MB, so 3DS games could theoretically be 16 times larger. Incidentally this is the same size jump from the Game Boy Advance's maximum cartridge size (32MB) to the DS's maximum size, so it makes sense.

However, it may be a while into the 3DS's life cycle until we start to see games that size as they would be larger than most Wii games.
