Internet Forums: Where everyone's a professional everything

27 April 2011 - 08:57 AM

For the past few months (ever since Geohot was under fire), I've noticed a startling trend.

Internet gaming forum users (mostly the game sites I've been to, but I wouldn't put it past others) have no idea what they're talking about. Ever.
Okay, so maybe the "ever" part is a little bit absolute, but it happens often enough to not doubt it.

Gamers on Internet Forums are not:

Lawyers: Oh good lawd. When the Geohot case was on I must have heard over 100 newly made up laws. And when Sony took various legal actions, there were debates whether or not it was legal. I saw a lot of "Teh corruptz! $ony briiiibez!" and whatnot.
It's like everyone (I'll use a blanket-statement. It's easier that way.) learned law practice off the back of a Captain Crunch box.

Business folk: I've seen so many off the wall proposals on how X company is going to fail because Y incident happened. And how that company can get back on its feet.
Microsoft hire Geohot to hack the PS3?
Really?
Really?
Really?

Philanthrops: Internet forums are full of just mean people.
"Send to Geohot to jail so he can be buttraped forever."
"Drag the case out so Geohot doesn't have any money left!"
"It serves Sony right! Down with Sony! I hope they fail!"
"I really hope Justin Beiber dies" (Not video game related, but darnit all I've seen this in more places than I care to count)

Network Administrators: No one knows how a network works around here.
It seems that typing 192.168.1.1 is the extent anyone has ever had in regards to networks.

Now, this is the part where I say I'm graduation college in a few months from my school's College of Business with a Computer Information Systems degree and how that qualifies me an expert on this stuff (due to having many business classes, including business law, as well as computer and network classes).
But that's pretty much wrong. I can't tell you much insight on this as I don't know anything terribly advanced (companies send you to training for that stuff.) I'm still rage-facing that I'm spending so much time in school so I can learn the basics, but the more time I spend here, I realize why.

I have no clue what's the right answer, but the basics let me figure out who has no earthly clue.
Those who have a good clue, I cant tell.

Once again, I used a lot, LOT of blanket statements. I know there's some of you out there that actually have a clue what you're talking about, but you're drowned out by those who only think they have a clue.

And don't even get me started on when folks on the internet forum have a "debate."
Oh... Ohgod. Let me just hit Post New Topic before I begin my rant.

TL;DR: You guys (blanket statement) are dumb.
But don't worry, so am I.

Will visual basic knowledge help me learn how to edit roms?

18 March 2011 - 06:43 PM

Hi there. Senior CIS major in college over here.

I'm in a Java development class right now, and I'm actually pretty good at it. I don't have a hard time wrapping my head around code at all, which is surprising.
But, it's moreso basic coding right now. So, I'll try not to get ahead of myself.

One thing I'd love to do with Pokemon Roms is edit the wild pokemans to fix the main problem I have with the game: Not enough variety in wild pokemon you meet early in game. I usually quit playing pokemon games because I get tired of seeing the same 9 wild pokemon in the first 10 hours of the game, maybe 1 of which is useful!

But, I come in humble (maybe), and maybe different than most. I've been watching this board and many come in saying "I don't any programming but I can learn" and you never hear from them again.

What I want to know is would I be able to take my knowledge of visual basic when I'm done and apply it to rom hacking, or if it'd be a far stretch from what I'd know.
I know VB is a bit primitive compared to C+, C++, and C#, so this is why I'm asking.

Strange download speed question for you in the know.

22 January 2011 - 04:00 PM

Alright. I'm trying to download some rather large files from my newsgroup.

But, the speed instantly goes down to no more than 300 or so KB/S.

Which is odd, for I've got a 10 mb/s connection I'm paying for. But, when I speed test, I get a 8 mb/s speed. Not what I'm paying for, but certainly faster than 300 KB/s. Should be hovering 1 MB/s if anything.

When I start downloading and the speed drops like that, my bandwidth suddenly turns to crap. Even though the newsgroup is using 300 KB/S of the 1 MB/S available, my internet basically grinds to a halt as if it only has 300 KB/s worth of badnwidth to dish out!

Anyone got any theories?

Edit: Fixed it by rebooting my router.
It's a darn'd shame things gotta get fixed that way.
I rebooted it 12 days ago!

Just got my DSTWO in today... And well.

16 July 2010 - 02:19 AM

Okay. So, I got two packages in today. I have some stuff coming in from Hong Kong this week, and I also had ordered a DSTWO from Leetmod.

Well, I open the DSTWO pacakge, thinking it was a USB phone I had, or some cables.

I take out the black, thin box, but I was looking at the back.

I stare at it and think, " .... Condoms?"

I flipped it over and saw, "DSTWO"
"OHHHHHHH. Not condoms."

Upon taking it out, I felt it. It was nice and sturdy, and had some indented plastic bits along the yellow connector rod things. Was quite impressed! Felt very solid!

Pleased with my purchase.

Also, what cheat database does DSTWO use?

EDIT: OHGOD. The sticky above evaded me. Feel slightly dimmer asking the question.
But, thanks Lolcat.
You make my day once again.

Uh oh. I think my Cyclo's poopin' out on me.

My games are starting to freeze up uncomfortably often, such as DQ IX. Going into buildings, going into battles, anything that might require reading off the microSD card sometimes freezes.

Alos, many times when I boot up the bad boy, "MicroSD card could not be found!"

I have to take the SD card out and put it back in.

I tested this with other SD cards, hoping it was the SD card. A simple 11 dollar fix!
But, they had the same problems.

I use the Panasonic SD Formatter, still with no luck.

After years of humble service, it looks like this bad boy just may have to be replaced.

I was looking at Acekard, as it's cheap. And, usually I'd look into another CycloDS, since I enjoyed the compatibility, but so many games that have Anti-piracy are pretty much insta-cracked nowadays.

Or is this a commonly fixed problem? It just started going this about a month ago, and progressively getting worse!

Edit: Also, on RealHotStuff.
The "Free shipping" optoin. This means "I come 2 weeks from China"?
