I remember a test MAME (the Arcade emu) did back then. It did already support dual-cores natively at the time, still the stronger single-cores were almost faster than the dual-cores, in the tests.

Well, I actually read in another topic (not sure where it is, but it was on GBAtemp - something about future computers) that CPUs have basically reached the maximum achievable clock speed, as far as power goes. Simply put, the only way to go is to add more cores/optimise the cores.
This is probably partly incorrect - I'm just quoting someone else
