Handheld Gamers Moving From Dedicated Devices to Smartphones

09 December 2010 - 01:53 AM

QUOTE
Industry Gamers reports on the results of a new survey from market research firm Interpret revealing that users of handheld games are increasingly moving away from dedicated devices such as the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP in favor of smartphones such as the iPhone.

The report, "The Phone Gaming Revolution: Do the DS and PSP Stand a Chance?," found that 43.8% of the phone/DS/PSP gaming market plays games on phones, which represents a significant 53.2% increase over the past year. At the same time, Interpret says that the proportion of those who play on the DS or PSP has fallen by 13%.
But while that data could indicate that the market for handheld gaming is simply expanding with the increasing capabilities of phones, other data shows that users of dedicated gaming devices are in fact abandoning those devices in favor of their phones.

The company notes, "Gamers appear to be defecting from their handheld gaming devices to phones to get their gaming kicks: a full 27.2% of consumers who indicate that they play games on their phones only (and not on the DS/PSP) actually own a DS or PSP, but do not actively use the device(s)."
With existing dedicated gaming devices being forsaken in favor of all-in-one smartphone devices, some analysts are questioning whether dedicated devices have a significant role in the future portable gaming market. Sony at least appears to be responding to the threat with a "PlayStation Phone" of its own that appears to be an Android-based device offering many of the features of a smartphone while also including hardware buttons akin to those found on traditional handheld gaming devices.

What do you guys think?

What I think is that if it's PSP related then it's pretty justifiable (the PSP has seen better days), but true die hard fans of the DS will obviously keep on Nintendo's side. As for the indecisive, get the best of both worlds: DS AND iOS. Skip the PSP. wink.gif

Some questions about EZFlash Vi

09 August 2010 - 02:47 PM

Okay, I got my new EZFlash Vi today, and had no problem getting 3.0 OB1 on it (had to upgrade to v101 and then it said 3.0, otherwise only 2.0 RC16). Problem is, I got two annoyances that I'd like to see solved:

1) It DOESN'T recognize my Acekard saves! I mean, I launch a game, and it creates a new .sav, and then I have to start again? I want it to read my AK saves. I thought it was gonna overwrite my AK save, but then I launched it on AK and it loaded up the .sav no problem.

EDIT: FIXED, just needed to create a SAVE folder and drag all my saves there.

2) The NDS listing is TERRIBLE compared to my AK. I want it to display .NDS files ONLY, and it's displaying .nds, .sav and tons of other formats I don't want. How can I control this?

Thanks.

Pokemon HGSS question!

29 March 2010 - 01:37 AM

Alright, so I'm getting an Acekard soon, and hope that it fulfills my standards - which I expect it will. xD

Now, I'm considering buying the official Pokemon SS game, but I have a question (I know I can play on AK, but I want the Pokewalker stuff as well):

1- Now, I know there is an app called Savsender and Savreceiver which gets your retails .sav on the PC, and it works, because I've used it before. So I get my .sav, imagine, and I edit it in Pokesav. After editing, I want to send it back to my retail cart. Is it possible with these apps? If not, are there any apps to do that?

Thanks.

Top Screen doesn't work anymore...partially

20 September 2009 - 12:43 AM

Well, this is the situation: my sister's DS broke its right hinge (the one near the lights, like the image below but on the right side):

Now, it all worked fine, the DS no longer had that support of the hinge and when the screens were open instead of forming a 150 angle (like normally), they formed an 180 one. The screens were still working, though.

However, the top screen now only turns on the backlight, whilst the bottom one works perfectly. Do you think the ribbon cable has somehow gotten a bit loose? I doubt it's damaged, otherwise it wouldn't even turn on the backlight...

The crack is on the right side, and I know the ribbon cable connects on the left, but since the DS was in bad shape, it's likely it's damaged.

What do you think I should do? Get a full housing and replace it?

Can I update?

26 December 2008 - 06:50 PM

Ok, guys, I got a PSP for Xmas. I checked it's firmware and it has 3.95. I also looked at the date code and it's 8B, which is CFW'able. Can I update to v5.00 and later use a Pandora without fear? Thanks.
